“After buying a Merlin jacket (The Kurkbury). I've been very impressed by it. I've had no issues with its waterproofing as the waterproof membrane does a great job and the wax treatment is a bonus that keeps the outer fabric from wetting out. However, as I understand it, the more recent Merlin jackets (the ones made from Cotec) have quite a different handle to conventional waxed cotton. It's quite matte, not greasy at all, you'd barely notice that it's waxed cotton to be honest. For some people, this will be ideal, I can definitely understand people not wanting a waxy feeling jacket. I, on the other hand, really wanted a bit of a waxy shine so I bought a tin of Merlin wax and applied it. Hot water bath to melt it, cotton cloth to apply and hairdryer to finish. While it wasn't exactly a quick affair, I much prefer the look of the jacket now and it was definitely worth doing. If anything it'll be even more water repellent now so that's a big plus. I still have plenty left for the next time it or another jacket needs doing.”
