I’ve purchased two DKN XC-190 elliptical cross trainers for me and my wife, so that we’ve each got our own personal equipment. It’s worth noting that we’ve been using the smaller DKN XC-140i for the last five years. We bought the XC-190’s because they looked to be a smaller and more compact setup that would fit better into a small bedroom we’ve converted to a mini gym. However, they are really big machines, much larger than the XC-140i, which surprised us a little and no we couldn’t get to see one anywhere near before buying but relied on our experience of DKN. Nonetheless, they fit comfortably in the gym and we are pleased with the build quality and performance; see attached photo. The other important factor to mention is they are heavy, 71 kg, which was a significant consideration for us because of our age and the fact that both had to be carried upstairs to the gym. They came in two of the biggest boxes ever delivered to our home and it took two men and a trolley to lift and manoeuvre each one in to our Lounge. Thankfully, when we opened the box, the XC-190 was broken down into several easily manageable units, even the potentially heavy section containing the flywheel was easily lifted and handled by one person. Assembling each machine was straightforward for one person and took about 45-60 minutes each at a nice easy pace. The computer display, as far as I can see is exactly the same as the XC-140i machines so for us there was no time lost in getting used to a different setup. Even then for the person new to these DKN cross trainers, the usage of the display is self intuitive. There are several pre-set programs (16) and the facility to connect an i-pad but, for us, we simply use them in manual mode, setting the time, distance, work effort and desired calorie workout. The biggest ‘problem’ we both encountered with the XC-190 is physically adapting usage from the XC-140i cross trainers. After using the XC-140i cross trainers for five years it has taken a little time with the XC-190 to get used to the subtle changes in the elliptical action. The major difference we also found is the enhanced rake on the rocking arm which in use brings it much closer to our shoulders than the previous XC-140i machines. Both of us feel that it is somewhere at least 1-2 inches too close. I’m 5’-9” tall but I can’t help feeling someone a few inches over 6 feet tall may find the closeness of the rocking arm action uncomfortable. Notwithstanding that issue we are both satisfied with the XC-190’s overall performance - the pedal arm and footplate glide smoothly and almost silently over the aluminium track, the elliptical action creates no discernible unwanted movement or instability of the machine and there is a good feel to the solid build quality of the XC-190 cross trainer.

The DKN XC-190 is the best home cross trainer you can get for less than £1000, It’s well made and sturdy and feels like a more expensive trainer. Assembly is relatively easy, I had this put together without any help in 45 minutes, and the instructions are easy to follow. The cross trainer itself has plenty of programmes from beginner to advanced and the usual manual adjust as you train setting. The display shows everything you need to know while working out, speed, distance, calories, resistance level etc. with the buttons below the screen for start/stop, up and down, reset and enter. Not the most exciting and interesting display, but what this trainer lacks in electronics, it certainly makes up for in build quality. It’s also very quiet to when in use, my huffing and puffing is louder than the noise of the machine. I’m happy I discovered the DKN XC-190 on sweatband.com, I only wish I’d found it months ago!

A robustly constructed machine. Good stability and shorter than the rear-driven trainers so that aspect is good for smaller rooms Fairly good stride length. Good basic control panel which manages without the superfluous (my opinion) internet-based trainers. Bluetooth heart monitor works well with the Polarflo chest band. The wheels make it easy to move even though it is 70+ kilograms. The handles are too high though (I'm a six-footer) and there is no heart rate sensor on these if you need that facility, sensors are on the static handles only (your heart rate will be lower if you hold these instead of the moving handles). Assembly was relatively straightforward until it came to putting on the vertical handles. Needs two to do this as they fit very tightly over the pins on the column and foot-plate arms and it is difficult to hold the position by yourself.

The trainer itself is great. I like the longer stride length, it has a smooth action and is quiet. It could do with better instructions both for the construction and the console.

Comfortable ride and good grip. Incline adjustability and power are very good. Build quality is fine though sometimes it squeaks. Disappointed with the computer, very rudimentary. Connectivity with app is not great. The fan is poor. A bit too heavy and not easy to move around. Overall it’s good but for this price it can be better. I avoided the Nordictrack because of the awful customer service reviews and build quality reviews and I am happy with my choice.
