I’ve run in the cumulus since 2003, and each successive version was an improvement on the previous. Unfortunately, Asics have changed the Cumulus for the worse with this iteration. To begin with, by comparison with all previous versions, the materials in version 20 feel cheap and nasty. The previous high quality feel has gone while the price has gone up. The worst aspect though is how it feels. The new foam, whilst supposedly lighter, is very poor quality and leaves the shoe feeling flat and unresponsive with less cushioning and a jarring feeling. The biggest mistake was the removal of the midfoot bridge which always made the shoe particularly special for me. That bridge resulted in the forefoot having a somewhat convex shape curving outward from the midfoit to the toe in a way that flat soled shoes don’t. The geometry is all wrong. Previous versions therefore encouraged a midfoot strike and rolled beautifully up on the toes, making them smooth and effortless over all distances. This version though, with its flat sole, feels flat and lifeless, feels heavier despite being lighter, and is one of the worst shoes I’ve ever come across. Very disappointed with these changes Asics, I won’t be buying Asics again unless they rethink their current design philosophy and stop using substandard materials whilst charging overly inflated prices for inferior shoes.
