“Using it as a digital photo frame, photos looks amazingly good dithered into 8 colours if less vibrant.
The only downside is a lot of the example code did not work out of the box and I still need to tinker with it to attempt to do more with this display.”
Ahoy Ian
Sorry to hear that that you had problems with the examples - please could you send our software team the details of what's not working as it should so we can get it fixed up? https://github.com/pimoroni/pimoroni-pico/issues
“Very easy to use wiht MicroPython. Quickly changed it to just pull a photo from a home server, updates once a day. Now I can change the frame whenever I want without fiddling with anything!”
“I purchased the kit and not disappointed. After reading the instructions twice I understood what I needed to do to update the secret file. Just starting to learning micropython which is close to CircuitPython. I dowa take time to update the screen and the quality is good and colors are bright as long as it warm in the room. If it cold the colors are not as bright. I like the examples. I do wish the reset button was on the front instead of the back. I wanted to mat this in a picture frame but settles for the desktop legs. It would been cool for a stemma connect so you could plug is sensors. A bit pricey but the quality and workmanship makes it worth it. Thanks.”
“I should start by saying I love Pimoroni + the hardware they produce. I love to support them, and the service is fantastic. There are some issues with this purchase though.
The lack of dimensional drawing made the design of an enclosure un-necessarily difficult. This is just an oversight for the 7.3 (for some reason, it's available for the other 5in in this series).
The bigger issue for me:
In the box, there are no cards/ pamflet to guide you to the right documentation for this, and I found myself hunting around for quite a bit to figure things out.
Even now, if you look on e.g. GitHub, I don't think many have ventured much outside of the functionality provided inside of Pimoroni's own examples - my guess is this is probably because the lack of general documentation on the functions/ libraries/ harware used. Some of this might be scattered across the internet, but Pimoroni should really have just packaged everything up into one comprehensive user guide.
In summary: great hardware, really excited to play with it, ultimately ended up frustratedy with the lack of documentation on all functions + dimensional drawing.
I'm happy to work with Pimoroni to build this up, it's definitely an easy fix some attention - I think this will lower the barriers to entry and really allow this product to appeal to a much wider audience.”
Ahoy Peter - sorry to hear that you struggled to find documentation for this one.
Did you find our Getting Started guide at https://learn.pimoroni.com/article/getting-started-with-inky-frame ? If you have any suggestions for information that you think should be included there we'd love to hear them - you can drop us an email at support@pimoroni.com
“I bought it as a Christmas present project for my Mum. I specd up a custom frame and have written code to pull down dithered images from an Azure Storage account. That way I can process/upload family pictures and such to Azure and the frame will update every hour during the day pulling down said images.
A magic art frame!”
“It's been so much fun playing with my new Inky Frame! This is my first time working with any kind of screen like this, so it has been a bit of a learning curve, but the getting-started documentation has been very helpful. I am struggling a bit to figure out why certain images will load to the frame but others won't, but I'm sure with more experimentation I'll figure it out.”
