As it happens, I wanted some functionality that is slightly different to the standard provided by the official software, so I asked on the Pimoroni Forums and Hey Presto! “Forget the software. I wanted to "play" a file on a remote RPI0W and hoped for a simple programming interface. Fortunately if you make the device the default output device the Raspian omxplayer works fine eg. "omxplayer -o alsa sound file path" Its a dedicated application.”
“Does what it says on the tin. Setup using pimoroni instructions using Mopiidy & Iris played mp3 files also received radio stations using mopidy extensions. Also played audio from RPi desktop. Using pair of old Yamaha Desktop Speakers wired direct, sounds good. I'm using Pi Zero W.”
