This hat provides an easy way to experiment with the lights only if you do not want to use your GPIO pins for anything else. Especially, when you work with a Pi version with too few ports. For more serious projects, the Mote Host might be a better option, so that you can combine the lights with other components. (switches or sensors) And of course you need to be certain that your device has enough power to spare for these light sources.

Mote is really quite simple. You plus it into you pi, use the USB ports to connect up to 4 mote sticks and then make shiny things with fairly simple code. I have almost no choosing skills bit child do it. Nice project for families or someone who wants to add a bit of led bling to their lives.

I've used the Mote and Mote pHAT for a number of technology entertainment projects and it works perfectly every time. Great product, support and documentation. My latest slightly barmy idea was a sparkly Santa beard.

I bought the Mote kit recently and really enjoyed setting it up, but found that all the USB cables a little messy. At the time, I remember thinking "I wish there was a HAT / pHAT for the Pi instead" and then hey-presto, this came along! This does the same job as the Mote kit - it powers and controls your Mote sticks connected by USB - but in a more compact way. I've got mine setup on my Pi and I use Siri to control the lights, which are installed around my home media centre at home. Very nice and a welcome upgrade to the Mote kit for Pi fans.
