“The pergola is a solid construction with chunky 6” posts and 4x2” frame. However as a structure the lack of 45 degree bracing across the front and back beams meant that it lacked rigidity (see the Ruby photo). I manufactured additional brace pieces from 4x2 to give the structure added strength. Additionally, the pergola is only supplied with 6” screws. I did not think that this was adequate to support the roof structure so added two diagonal coach bolts to where the top of each post joins the beam. This is not a huge deal, but as an engineer I think that it adds an additional level of safety, against the effects of strong winds, and lateral forces.”
