This Specific Digital Piano is the latest from yamaha as of 2016.It features improved reverb and increased polyphony and many more improvements. Built for the play who requires a key action for more serious playing, the YDP163 is equipped with the multi-sensor GH3 (Graded Hammer 3) keyboard action. This action features three sensors as well as synthetic ivory keytops which gives the player a more tactile feel with the response similar to that of some of the finest pianos throughout history. The 'Pure CF' sound engine gives an exceptional example of the Yamaha CFIIIS concert grand piano which the more experienced player will appreciate. In addition power output is increased with its 20w stereo amplification. 192 Notes polyphony ensure that you won't experience note 'drop out' and sustained notes ring through faithfully. Half-Damper pedal allows gradual use of the pedals giving you additional control, similar to that of a real acoustic piano and 'Damper Resonance' gives a broad and deep resonance when the pedal is used. Built-in recording is taken care of with the 2-track recorder which can be used with any of the 12 built-in sounds. Playing at low volumes used to result in a loss of treble and bass response. This is now taken care of with Yamahas 'IAC' (Instrument Acoustic Control) feature, which automatically adjusts the bass and treble response in relation to the current volume level, so you'll always get the best tone at whatever level you play at. Connect the piano to your IOS Device to give additional control with the 'Digital Piano Controller' application. With a simplified user interface this adds a new level of control and functionality to your Yamaha instrument. Select sounds with ease, record and adjust settings of the piano by using your IOS touchscreen. What We Think... A great step up from the YDP143 you can really notice the difference the moment that you start playing. With increased amplification and the addition of synthetic ivory keytops the whole playing experience is improved. Connecting up to your IOS device is loads of fun and once you do you won't want to go back, with a superb user interface to control all of the piano features. It's brilliant! Excellent piano. We are delighted with both the sound and the attractive design. The service and one day delivery were excellent. It is a shame that the music stand has no page holding pins.

There is a good selection of sounds on this keyboard, the piano sounds are among the most realistic I've heard, it's challenging to hear any difference between the three piano sounds though. I only bought it as a piano so this is fine, I've no real need to vary this other than out of interest. The demos and piano repertoire pieces are enjoyable and show off the piano sound well. It seems very sturdy, with a support beneath the pedals to reduce the stress on what is a long span between the legs, the pedals feel firm and robust (if a little too firm), it 'also too early to say how robust it is as I've only had it for one week. Having said that the connections look robust and the quality of materials felt solid enough. It's certainly, at this stage, a nice liking piece of furniture. The keyboard cover was out of alignment on receipt and I thought that it wasn't going to work, a little patience and gentle persuasion and it freed up and now runs as smoothly as you like, concerning initially though. Keys fell realistic (for a digital keyboard) again though adjusting this through the three setting makes no perceptible difference in my opinion. Again, do I need this? overall I'm delighted with it so far.

I wanted to get back to playing the piano which I had done as a child, some 50 odd years ago, but did not have the room for an upright piano, nor did I want the problem of having to keep having it tuned. I looked to the digital piano as an alternative, and I can honestly say I have not been disappointed with my choice of the Yamaha. The quality of the build is very good with the added advantage of it being easier to move than an upright. Although, I am no concert pianist, I feel the piano sound is as good as any piano I have played and again with the advantage to easily change the sound when required. My grandsons also love it and play it when ever they visit, they are now keen to learn to play piano.
