I use Remo Powerstroke P3 X drum heads on snare drums when I need richness and brightness, but with some control over the overtone decay. Recently this has proven useful on three different drums; one with a ringy steel shell, one with a wood stave shell that needs high tuning without losing character, and lastly a thin vintage wood shell snare where I was aiming for a swampy low tone.

The Remo Powerstroke P3 X drum head has a useful balance of features. The 14mil thickness provides more depth of tone than a conventional 10mil single ply batter head, and the 2mil inlay ring reduces some of the overtones. I find it particularly useful for a snare drum when I need to emphasise the richness, and achieve some control over the overtone decay, but without losing too much brightness. Some other heads of a similar design can fail to achieve that combination. However, it might not be as useful when either a more open, or a more clearly dampened character is required.
