Earlier in the year, I decided to stop kidding myself that I still had the physical strength that I had at 31. The ability to pull-start my petrol mower would evade me some time soon. I decided to look out for a Makita battery powered mower, as I already had 2 Li batteries from my other Makita power tools. I found and bought a Makita DLM480Z (twin 18V, 480mm body only) from Power Tool World at a reasonable price. In practice I have found: a. The mower is a lot quieter and lighter than the petrol one. b. The cut is easily as good as, if not better then, the petrol mower. c. The 4AHr batteries last enough to cut my rear lawn (about 720 sq ft) but died shortly after starting the front lawn. d. My single charging unit took more than one hour to recharge each battery. e. I like the ease of height adjustment, starting, the grass box size, weight balance when emptying and the “full”warning device (a flapping piece of material). f. The Makita build quality is good, so I expect it to last. Learning points: a. If you intend to buy a cordless mower, get the bigger batteries and double charger if you can afford them. b. Make sure you have sufficient space in your shed to stow the mower as it is about 160 cm long with the arm unfolded and about 80 cm folded. c. Get the right size (rotor diameter) for your lawn. I nearly got the next size up which would have been a mistake.

So far so good, very easy to assemble. Folds down nicely and can be stored vertically. Easily manages my large lawn using two 3.0ah batteries.

Purchased to be a back up for when ride on mower is out of action ( all too often!) We have about 0.75 acre of lawn garden and the rest is paddock. The Makita will do the lawns with 2 or 3 battery switches depending on how long the grass is. Very impressed with quality of cut, great range in cutting height, and mulching works very well. Have not tried collecting as grass box is fairly small and would require frequent emptying. Very easy to manoeuvre. Very pleased and would definitely recommend
