Chose this model because it had a metal deck and sq m fitted in with our lawn at about 600sq m. First try was a November cut, grass was long and wet. Performance was good. It was necessary to cut higher over the really long stuff. It did cut out once or twice, however a petrol would have done the same in my experience. As the grass in a quarter of the lawn was long the mower was operating at full speed. This meant that the batteries ran out with about 10 sq m left! I do anticipate that at a normal cut height that it will do the whole amount in 2 batteries. The mower starts slow and adjusts its speed itself. The mower is not light however the wheels seem a bit wider than the petrol mower’s I have used and the result was that there is less marking of the grass with tyre marks. Wheels seem good quality and spin freely. Would have given 5 however the deck seems to be lacking in design on the underside with large amounts of grass collecting. I know The same would have happen with petrol however I did spray the underside with dry PTFE spray prior to using in the hope that it would reduce build up. Still it cleaned off easily. I was worried about going from petrol to battery but glad I did…. Fed up with petrol problems. Height adjustment is easy, with one lever. Handles fold for storage. Grass bag worked as expected however would have preferred it to be a bit stouter.

This Lawnmower is exactly what I wanted and lives up to my expectations. Out of the box it is easy to assemble in around 10 minutes. Batteries fit under top cover which is maybe a bit flimsy but boasts it is tough ABS plastic. There is a red security plug which must be pushed in to operate the mower. Remove it like you would a spark plug when doing maintenance. Or when not in use to prevent children accidentally starting the mower. Height adjustment is via a single lever. To start simply press on button push in red button on handle pull back safety bar which is light in use and motor does a soft start before building up speed. The mower is solidly built with a steel alloy deck. It is not unduly heavy 23Kg to lift up steps or into a vehicle and is extremely easy to push around even on an incline. My 55kg elderly other half finds it no effort to use. It is very quiet in use and makes a decent quality cut, the large grass box means not having to empty it so often. Very wet grass or very long grass does not pick up as well so bring height down over 2 or 3 cuts a few days apart. When a bit drier will pick up tree blossom and small dropped fruits, twigs. When encountering thicker / higher grass power is automatically increased. This can be switched off by choosing constant power. The mulcher attachment works well when mowing regularly and just taking 30mm off the top. When cutting close into a fence only one side will do the job due to wheels jutting out a bit on other side. The 1.4KW motor is ample for the job and I cannot see much difference between my old 2.6KW rated Briggs and this. When using 6Ah batteries my 450 sq m lawn is cut on one charge with a little to spare. The handles fold in half for storage It can be stored upright unlike a petrol mower saving shed space. Overall I like using this mower, ease of use and starting, ease of cleaning and low maintenance.

Best mower I've ever had. Owned a Hayter petrol self-driven for about 30 years with no issues, but the change to battery power did not disappoint. Although the Makita is not power driven, it is extremely easy to push. The height adjustment (10 settings) is easy to handle and gives maximum flexibility. I use the same batteries I have for my other Makita tools and equipment, so no worries. Although a bit expensive, my advice is, bite the bullet and go for it. You won't be disappointed.

Bought the 460 z because I have stacks of 18v batteries and I know how tough makita tools are. Only cut end of season wet grass but that is enough to tell me how good it's going to be. Another brilliant tool makita

I spent a long time comparing reviews and information on cordless mowers. My views were biased by already owning a Makita cordless strimmer. If practical, I wanted a mower that used the same batteries and chargers. Even with that I still found it difficult to compare models within the Makita range. The manufacturer's website provides really limited technical specifications, and virtually no dimensions (for example, handle height is particularly important to me.) Different dealers list models with similar model numbers, but with subtly different suffixes e.g. is a Makita DLM460 the same as a Makita DLM460Z and a Makita DLM460PT2 ... etc? Trying to find the differences between these was a nightmare. I suspect (I'm still not sure) that they may be marketing designations for how the products are sold (with/without bateries, charger etc) rather than differences in the models themselves. I eventually found a couple of reviews that gave me useful, and positive, information. One suggested that the model I had been considering, further down the Makita range, suffered from structural flimsiness. It has a plastic frame and chassis. The strong recommendation was to go for the DLM460 or above which have steel chasses and frames. Anyway, after much internal debate I decided to go for the DLM460Z which doesn't come with batteries or a charger. PROs -> Very solid construction. Gives great confidence in a machine that should work for a long time. -> Batteries charge quickly - 40-50 minutes from flat - and you can always find something else to do in a garden for that period. (I've not used the batteries from fully-charged to flat, but I've been satisfied so far with the duration I get and the area I can cut. My garden has several patches of lawn rather than one big area, and I tend to work on a patch or two and their surroundings at a time, rather than a full session of grasscutting everywhere.) -> I was pleasantly surprised when I took it out on long or wet grass. I didn't expect it to perform well, but it was much better than I anticipated. I wouldn't do it as a regular method, but I'd seen enough warnings about battery mowers and long/wet grass to make me very wary. CONs -> My God, this is heavy! There's no doubt this has a steel chassis/frame. The wheels are not powered, so you have to push this thing yourself. If you have a slope, beware. -> It also has plastic parts on the upper surface and these are flimsy. They are not structural, so no worries there. But just opening the lid for the battery compartment makes the plastic lid twist and flex. It doesn't live up to the sturdy image of the rest of the machine. A couple of extra molding ribs would surely have helped here. The battery lid also won't hold itself in an open position. That makes inserting/removing the batteries a stupid bit more difficult than it should be. Sure, I can do it. But could it be improved? Definitely. -> Assembly (hopefully a one-off task) wasn't easy. If you have an extra pair of hands to help you, take whatever offer you get. It can be done single-handedly but, again, it's as if this part escaped the final design check-off.
