“It's completely opaque, which is not something made clear on the website. While a silk shade glows with the light from the bulb, this is like putting a cardboard box on it - funnels light up and down, but emits nothing itself outwatds. Looks quite odd, and we will be returning it.”

I can see you have been in touch with my colleague and she did explain that the nature of the shade means that the light does not permeate through the material as well.
