Very well researched and a judicious combination of photographs, organisational data and narrative history. The maps are attractive but not as informative as they might be. Also, the authors barely reference the fact that the 'Sturmpanzer' was originally intended to be operated by the Assault Artillery, until Guderian was appointed Inspector General of Panzer Troops in spring 1943 and made his successful grab for all the heavy assault gun and assault howitzer designs then under development. It is striking that in the German after-action reports cited by the authors, as often as not the 'sturmpanzers' are referred to as assault howitzers, which of course is what they were.

I wanted to read this book before writing a review. This I have finally done and I am seriously impressed with the hard work of Timm Haasler, Simon Vosters and the Panzerwrecks team in creating this truly comprehensive publication The book is pleasingly text heavy, though thoughtfully and clearly written, with concise maps added to support the text. Images are included too, with a mixture of combat shots, factory manufacturing images, wartime interior images, colour artwork by Felipe Rodna and details of Sturmpanzer that still exist in museums. This means military historians and model makers are both satisfied, with comprehensive end notes included providing source references should the reader wish to research further. This is a common practice in academic history books but sadly missed in many military history publications with model makers included in the target audience. I cannot praise this publication enough. I can only wish Tim and Simon could tackle SturmPanzer-Abteilung 216 in the same way.
