This is the third Gerber legend I’ve owned in the last 15 or so years and I I’m generally pretty pleased with the performance of this well engineered tool. It’s not perfect (and I’ll explain the few faults later) but it’s pretty close. I’m a school science technician and I use the Gerber probably 10 or 20 times a day for various duties and I find I’m lost without it! I ‘lost’ my first Legend when I sent it back to Gerber for repair without including a return address (stupid!) so replaced it with another one. The faults on the original also reoccurred on the replacement and these were; The rubber grips fell off after a few years, the tip of the blade snapped off (actually my misuse both times so not really a fault) and the scissors spring got bent in some way which makes them difficult (but not impossible) to use. After a phone call to Gerber I sent the second one back (this time with the proper return address) and they replaced it with a brand new one including the ballistic case!! This was after some 5 years of constant use, now that’s a good guarantee!! Sadly, I lost this replacement after a few years tool so had to think seriously about getting another multitool and I made the mistake of buying a Leatherman Surge. Now the Surge is a very nicely made piece of kit with a similar specification to the Legend but I just didn’t get on with it for the following reasons. Firstly, it’s pretty heavy, the whole thing is solid steel whereas the Gerber has an Aluminium body, this makes for a real lump on the belt. The Surge is also a bit more difficult to operate one handed, its mechanism is a little stiffer and you have to be careful not to slice fingers when doing this. The pliers are not sprung which again make for awkward one handed operation. It’s also quite angular and is just not as nice to handle as the Legend. Finally, the Surge has interchangeable saw and file blades so you have change one for the other (the Legend has both ready to go). So, after six months with the Surge, I went back to the Legend and I love it! In summary, the good things about the Legend; Well made, good range of tools, sprung loaded pliers, very ergonomic feels great in the hand, light to carry, great guarantee. And the not so good; Scissors are a little small and (given my past experience) might not be a robust as they should be (certainly the Surge has nicer, slightly larger ones), rubber grip pads (which make for very comfortable handling) will probably not last as long as the rest of the tool. As I said, this is the third Legend I’ve had and I can’t see any surface differences in the quality of the product (I’m hoping they’re using better glue to stick the rubber grips on though) which I believe is a testament to the quality of Gerber tools generally.
