“The rubber tops squeeze out and push the end caps open so you need to cut the rubber to allow the clips to sit in place. The locking mechanism doesn’t actually work as there are other screws which can be removed and the box taken off along with the rails”

Sorry to hear of your disappointment with this product. The rubber is lengthened slightly to ensure a watertight seal as you can always cut a little off if required. The locking mechanism will not allow the bars to removed as the visible screws are inaccessible. From your pictures, it looks like the bars are doing a great job of supporting your roof box!
