Standard Protectakote is a tough yet flexible aromatic polyurethane that uses irregular rubber crumb to give a highly textured anti slip finish that is also non abrasive and extremely hard wearing. Available in a range of dark colours it is ideal for many applications. For external use or in areas of high wear we recommend using the UVR version.
Standard Protectakote is a unique formula aromatic polyurethane, incorporating rubber granules to give a tough flexible anti-slip (Nb. whilst often referred to as non-slip it is impossible to ever have a completely non-slip finish) finish that will not flake, chip or peel. It is a moisture cured single component Polyurethane so it can be easily applied to almost any surface including metal, concrete, wood, fibreglass, plastic and rubber leaving an attractive textured anti-slip finish that is resistant to impacts.

A one litre tin will cover approximately 1.5 m² (15 sq feet) with the recommended two coats.

Please note that for high wear areas, areas exposed to salt water or areas that are fully exposed to sunlight we recommend using the UVR version of Protectakote for maximum longevity. Protectakote UVR is not only more resistant to the effects of weathering and UV light but also has a 50% higher tensile strength and half the drying time of standard Protectakote.

To get an even finish with Protectakote it should be applied with a  textured honeycomb roller these are available in our Protectakote rollers & brushes section. They are available in a large variety of sizes to suit different applications which include a large diameter 3" roller which is ideal for painting the corrugated metal backs of pick-ups and vans.

The only solvent suitable for use with Protectakote for cleaning and dilution is Xylene, do NOT use Xylene blends that contain any other solvent such as isopropyl alcohol as that will prevent the Protectakote from curing.

Suitable Areas of Use:
Typical areas of use include the load areas of vans, pick ups and lorries, tail lifts, walk ways, steps, fire escapes, access ramps, safety areas around equipment, drain covers, play equipment, boat decks etc etc. Please note where there is high wear or the area is permanently exposed we recommend using the UVR or WB version.

Quick Guide to Application: - Please visit the protectakote.co.uk website or contact us for more information. When applying to areas larger than 15 m² a test patch should always be applied.

Painted Surfaces including automotive paint:

Any flaking or loose paint must be removed first, sound painted surfaces should be lightly abraded to remove the gloss, cleaned with an alkaline detergent such as CIF household cream cleaner, rinsed thoroughly and allowed to dry completely. A test should always be done first to check for compatability, we do not recommend over painting water based acrylic or chlorinated rubber paints.

Ceramic Tiles, Marble, Terrazo, Glass:

Surface should be thoroughly cleaned and degreased, then rinsed to leave a water break free surface. Protectakote Clear Primer Treatment applied & overcoated after approx 1 hour.

 Aluminium:

Abrade to bright fresh metal and prime with Protectakote Clear Primer, Protectakote 2K or for areas where there is no risk of water pooling Metcote, application should be completed within 30 minutes of abrading. For high wear areas we strongly recommend using Protectakote 2K.

Galvanised steel:

Scour with an alkaline detergent or pre-cleaner to remove all oil and create a water break free surface, lightly abrade and solvent wipe with Xylene and then prime within 3 hours of abrasion with a suitable etch primer such as Protectakote 2K or EP90 (two pack epoxy primer) for high wear applications or clear primer treatment.

Concrete:

New concrete should be minimum of 10 - 12 weeks old, surface should be clean & dry, first coat diluted 10% with Xylene. Concrete subject to rising damp or in high wear areas should be primed with Duraprime or EP90 first. Smooth, shiny concrete (power floated) requires etching or abrading first. Any crumbly surface (laitance) layer will have to be removed first with a stiff broom and concrete acid etch cleaner or physically removed.

Fibreglass:

Abrade the surface to remove all gloss, solvent wipe with Xylene.

Well weathered fibreglass just needs cleaning with Xylene. Adhesion can be improved by diluting the first coat by 5% with Xylene.

Ferrous metal:

Un-primed: We recommend priming with Flag Anti-Corrosive QD primer, if you do apply direct abrade the surface prior to painting, ensuring any loose rust is removed, surface should be cleaned with Xylene and allowed to dry prior to painting. For small patches of rust which aren't flaking you can use Rustbuster.

Primed: Protectakote adheres well to primed metal such as red oxide. We do not recommend applying to water based acrylic primers such as Omnicote.

Non ferrous metal:

Use Clear Primer Treatment, Protectakote 2K or EP90 as appropriate for the s

I have purchased a few tins of this product and am very impressed with it`s durability. The first purchase was to cover some steps to the front door and even with heavy use of people coming and going it has stood up very well . Having seen how durable it was I purchased more and actually painted the underside of my Jeep , floor , chassis and inner wheel arches and I can highly recommend it for that , it is superb against salt, stones etc and keeps the dreaded rust away. I have also used it to protect the underside of my 25 year old Toyota Celica, rubbed it down , treated and coated with Protectakote. I would highly recommend this product as it has many uses for protection also it is a lot cheaper than the other products used as bedliner . I dare say i will purchase more as my works van could do with some protection from the elements . I wish they would do it in Smooth Black finish as it would be perfect for exterior plastic trim for vehicles such as my van because it takes a bashing from the salt, stone chips etc . Overall a very good product , and at a very reasonable price.
