“Engineered to fail. The cables are steel, which rust rapidly and snap. This causes the internal cog to seize up. If the cable doesn't snap, eventually it will get clogged with dirt and this will also cause issues. I've also had the misfortune of the cable unravelling. I did manage to get the unit back to working condition, but it's something you really don't want to experience. Terrible design and purposefully engineered to fail by mazda engineers in order to make money on parts.”

“There's a strong possibility that problems with your mk4 electric windows are caused by a faulty regulator. The issue seems to be with the steel cable which corrodes and eventually fails. Unfortunately Mazda don't use stainless cables, something which seems like a basic error. The good news is that this is a job that any reasonably competent home mechanic can do in an hour or two. I followed a fabulous step by step You Tube video by a chap called Bob Shaw who should take the credit for me getting the job done successfully. Cheers Bob! One small tip is to make sure that the cables on the main pulley of the new regulator assembly don't spring off and unfurl themselves when you are refitting the motor. The main dealer was quoting a lead time of 2 months with the parts on back order in Japan. However, MX5parts came to the rescue once again with next day delivery - perfect service as usual! Thank you.”
