Window Winder Cables MX5 Mk1 Reviews

4.3 Rating 16 Reviews
Read MX5parts Reviews

Genuine Mazda PartThe MX-5 windows are operated by cables wrapped around a drum that is then turned by an electric motor. 99.9% of all problems with windows are caused by the rusting of the inner cables in their outer sleeves. This causes the windows to be stiff or run slowly and eventually the cables break. We can now supply replacement cables! Their are two cables in each mechanism, a short one (the upper cable, that raises the window) and a long one (the lower one, that lowers the window). We strongly recommend that you replace BOTH cables. We can also supply the nylon drum that the cables are wrapped round. This is often damaged when a cable breaks.Fits all Mkl models, 1989>1998 with electric windows.

Received the cables within 36 hours, great service.I read some reviews re-manual window installation regarding cutting of cable, things to do and not to do, all good tips. I agree that one cable is to long but can anyone advise how to cut the cable without damaging it. Regards

Nothing wrong with the cables etc. just one line of advice though- buy the aftermarket regulator kit and be done with it!after hours of struggling with my cable version i discover that the motors are slow and run at half speed. the regulator kits are a no brainer especially at that price.

I have also been in Engineering all my life and never been more frustrated than trying to fit these cables, I read some of the reviews before doing the job and also have 'Bobs' MX5 manual and I wasn't looking forward to it! After 5 initial hours I still couldn't get the cable to fit round the top pulley wheel, something seemed too short. I then found Maureen Macgregor's review ref the outer sleeve on the short (up cable) being 3 CM too long, when I checked she was right, I didn't want to start cutting the outer cable so used the old cable which showed no signs of wear, 1 hour later the assy was ready to refit to the car. I will return the incorrect cable to MX5 parts but what I don't understand is why NOK cables are still being supplied after all the comments from Customers, surely the Supplier has been notified?Otherwise service and delivery great

Was going to give these a bad review until I worked out the best way to fit them. Had to do both sides. First one took ages with much swearing, second was a piece of cake. Ignore previous post about cutting the outer sleeve. I ended up doing this in frustration on the first one but it is not necessary, they do fit. The important thing is to remove the plastic semi-circular guide at the bottom of the slide mechanism post. It comes out quite easily. Fit all the other parts of the cables - start with the winder drum cos it's the most fiddly - but leave the guide til last. It will slide back in with no problem. Doing this seems to be the only way to gain enough slack in the cables to fit them even with the adjusters fully in. Both windows function perfectly now. Good product and prompt delivery, as always.Incidentally, make sure you replace the plastic door screen. One side was missing on my car and the door card has some water damage; the other side was fine. The screen is under a tenner, the door card best part of £100.It's a fiddly job but not difficult. Have fun!

Have had a set of these in the garage for several months. Finally got round to tackling the fitting of them them today to my 18 year old Roadster.Did it without any particular problem, took a couple of hours. Most difficult bit is getting the motor out of the door behind the quarterlight window guide (drop it down to the bottom of the door with the regulator still inside the door but unbolted and move the bolts round in an arc) oh, and also the gooey masticked plastic behind the door trim. I did take the window out following the workshop manual, but didn't remove the exterior weatherstrip. Don't know how you would do it without doing this. Happy that window is no longer held up with Duck tape!

I ordered both cables with the drum and was impressed with yet another speedy delivery from MX-5 parts. However, I was not so impressed with the product. I had these cables professionally fitted at the local garage where I always take my car. After the mechanic fitted the cables, he wound the window down but they snapped when winding it back up. We then decided to order the regulator assembly instead. I hoped these cables would be the cheaper option when fixing my window but ended up shelling out £40 on the cables and then a further £75 for the regulator.Sorry MX-5 parts but I'm not very impressed with this product.

BRILLIANT, well done MX5 Parts. Arrived next day, not difficult to fit if you have a think about it, order both cables and the nylon drum. Make sure you renwew the black spring tensioners that come with the cables and screw them right in to give yourself a little slack in the cables, I used cable ties to keep the springs compressed, that way it is easy to do 2 1/2 turns on each side of the nylon drum, once you have done this drop the drum onto the motor spline and cut the cable ties, you now have spring tension on the cables, adjust the black adjusters and threadlock them. Job done. The windows now operate brilliantly.Editors note: Glad you were pleased with the items, and thank you also for the helpful tips on fitting them!
