Session Flute
This powerful flute is perfect for joining in with any traditional Irish music session. With excellent intonation, a strong woody tone and signature powerful low D, this McNeela African Blackwood flute will ensure you are welcome back to each session with open arms.
African Blackwood
We’ve chosen African Blackwood, one of the best tonewoods, because of its hardness, moisture resistance and excellent sound. This dense hardwood lends a dark, rich, and woody timber sound, which is exactly what you want from an Irish flute.
Sealing Technique
We use a cork-lapping sealing technique to protect the top tenon and for a firm head joint. This sealing technique also ensures zero leakage of precious air and helps you produce a barking low D.
Embouchure Hole
The flute features a squared ellipse embouchure hole for ease of play, and a brighter sound. The aperture is smaller than standard Pratten-style making it easier to fill and keep filled so you can keep playing without exhausting your lungs.
Intonation
When you tune the McNeela African Blackwood flute for one note all others follow. Our careful and precise tuning process during the manufacturing stage means little adjustment is needed to keep it in tune, leaving you to focus on your performance.
Developing Your Flute's Signature Sound
We recommend playing your wooden flute daily for about 15 minutes initially and steadily lengthening each playing period to help the flute develop its ‘voice’. This is a gradual process but it’s a lovely way to condition and mature the flute and well worth the time.
How To Care For Your Irish Wooden Flute

Dry your wooden flute thoroughly after playing, to prevent trapped moisture distorting and warping the wood.
Always take the flute apart after playing and when storing - this takes pressure off the tenons.
Store your flute in a cool, dry location.
Lightly oil the bore occasionally - only when necessary however or if you're located in a particularly dry climate, as over-oiling can cause cracks.
Use cork grease on the cork lapping to allow for ease of disassembling.
Never pull the flute when disassembling, rather, twist each part gently, backwards and forwards and slowly coax it off.
Try to avoid very dry conditions and do not leave the flute in direct sunlight or near a source of heat.
Always warm up your flute before playing.

I purchased my B -stock African Blackwood flute last November. It was delivered in good time to me in Canada. The 'cosmetic flaws' in the flute are two patches where the lighter-colored sapwood shows. This actually makes this instrument, to me, a beautiful one-of-a-kind flute. The sound is beautiful as well, now that I have been playing it for a couple of months! I am new to keyless flutes having played Boehm flute for the past thirty years, so it took a little while to get used to the differences. It has, as you say, a powerful sound and a rich low D. Love my flute as we bond more and more! Thank you!

I would have to agree! The lighter wood on these flutes can make them look very unique and appealing. It is great to hear that you are happy with it.

What I bought is an amazingly beautiful instrument with a amazing sound. Almost invisible micro scratches, for that price, that's a huge opportunity for small wallets !! The package was delivered super quickly and really well protected. Plus, newsletter brings useful info and emails (even automatic) are always written in a kind and positive tone, that's a rare experience on the web today. And yeah, again, THAT SOUND !!

Still figuring out how to adjust to the flat C#, but I can't even tell the defects, sounds great, and a great deal. Shipped fast and with no issues.

Hi Noah, delighted to hear you're enjoying our African Blackwood B-Stock flute. No doubt you'll adjust to the C# in time and get it bang on.

Ahhhh...this flute is gorgeous. B Stock? The imperfections are barely noticeable. The African Blackwood is so rich and beautiful. I'm new to the Irish keyless flute but have experience with a C-style keyed flute, and although the Irish flute is a "simple system" I find the C-style far easier to play (FYI for anyone like me). A wooden flute is far more temperamental! However, the richness of the low notes on the Irish flute keeps me working! I'm getting a handle on the notes available and the tuning. I find that the C#, A and B tend to be a little off so I'm adjusting accordingly, as this seems to be a common occurrence with the Irish flutes. I love it. Thank you!

After receiving my B stock Blackwood I was very impressed with the physical condition of the instrument. The physical imperfections in it are minor and hardly noticeable, I might even say they add character! What is more, it plays wonderfully and sounds just like you would expect. Producing a deep and rich sound is perfectly easy and it sounds wonderful overall. Truth be told, I feel like I got away with the best bargain of my life!
