I have tried to learn Irish Tin Whistle playing on my own in the past and ended up quitting because I could never get it to sound right. When I started using John O’Brien’s online Tutorial, everything has changed for me in just over a month. I’m really starting to get a hang of the Instrument and am sounding a lot more “Irish” when playing the tunes. Each lesson makes sense, builds on my skills, and gets me excited to learn how to do the next set of ornaments as I learn another tune that is just fun to play. I’m a very visual learner and this has allowed me to see what I could never do from reading and hearing alone. I would recommend this course to anyone and I already have to my fellow Piper friends who want to learn this instrument themselves. Thanks Again! This is exactly what I needed.

I am a beginner and was using other free online lessons but felt I was missing what I needed to develop good tone. I also know that it’s harder to unlearn bad habits that prevent quickly reaching competency. So I signed up and worked through a bunch of lessons over the last few days (did skip some things that were too easy) and WOW. This really is the way to learn this instrument. Top notch instruction—such well-thought out teaching methods. DO THE EXERCISES, increasing tempo until you fall apart, & keep coming back to them to get faster. I don’t know why that works, so well, but my tone is drastically better and I’m not thinking about the notes or my fingers so much—I just ‘know’ what makes what sound. I’m able to quickly pick out other tunes by ear now, too. Worth every penny!

I am enjoying learning the whistle on the Wild. Having played the clarinet throughout high school, I do like the slightly huskier tone of the Wild whistle - so much so that I think that I will get a low whistle next - though only once I've learnt to play one this well! I am learning through the online lessons available through McNeela and they are excellent - fun, engaging, the tutor is great, there are 'sessions' to play along with, and I am confident that I am learning the skills I need so I can just relax and enjoy progressing through the programme at my own pace. The only problem I have is that the whistle is so distracting - I keep picking it up to play a tune, which turns into two or three, when I should be working grrr!

I just started my whistle sessions with John O'Brien and my first impression is that it is everything you said it is! Very clear instruction and professionally recorded lessons. If I may most humbly give some of my first thoughts and advise to fellow students: -START FROM THE BEGINNING- Even though it may seem basic (especially for us classically trained woodwind players), we are going there because it is a new instrument to us. - DO NOT READ THE TABS FIRST- It is a good chance to practice our listening and retention skills. -PRACTICE TECHNIQUE AS YOU GO ALONG- Even though the early lessons are very basic, it is a good chance to practice intonation by matching pitch and time with the lesson. I really like that John also sings the note ("beautifully") to pitch . This is a great chance to practice Solfege by also singing the notes and helps with memorization. Thank for the opportunity to put in my two cents as a music teacher. I look forward to going through this excellent course and learning this "new" instrument!

Such a wonderful course! I thoroughly recommend it! John O'Brien is a fantastic musician and teacher and I had so much fun starting at beginner level and working my way through the course. I thought it would be difficult given that it's online but there's such a clear course structure and build up that I found myself having loads of fun and learning a lot at the same time. I particularly enjoyed how all encompassing the course was from videos, to tunes, to sheet music, to technique building, to being able to play along with backing music and receiving recommendations for music to listen to. A brilliant course, 5 stars!

I can’t recommend this course enough! I was totally stuck and wasn’t improving at all trying to learn on my own. It is fun and paced beautifully, the course material is fantastic and the video instruction is amazing. Trust me it’s worth it and more if you seriously want to improve as a tin whistle player. I look forward every day to my lesson time!

This course is by far and away the best online course I've tried for learning whistle. John is a natural teacher and he really digs into not just the whistle, but Irish music in general. Ornaments are clearly described and demonstrated and the courses progress at a nice pace. Not really complaints, but things I noted. The courses are really meant to take you a week at a time to digest and go through, so if you're expecting to blast through each video in 15 minutes, you're likely going to find the tunes played through at the end to be much too quick. Take your time and practice each part until you're up to speed. Also, it'd be nice if the web player had a 'Back 10 Seconds' button, or similar, as other e-learning sites do, as you're likely going to want to do quick rewinds to practise certain bits. Overall, a great course!

I was amazed at how quickly I was able to learn the tunes! John's teaching technique, breaking down each tune into phrases and playing them slowly at first, helps to boost confidence. I had a little trouble getting the site to work properly but once I was told to make sure to refresh the page it worked like a charm. John's sense of humor brings additional enjoyment as does the selection/variety of traditional tunes. Playing was even more fun once my McNeela "Wild" whistle arrived. I strongly recommend this course to anyone looking to pick up the Irish whistle.
