Reviews for the Setanta Low Whistle
“I just received a low D a week ago and am extremely impressed with it so far. It is solidly made with a tuning slide standard - three o-rings. The tone holes are comfortable with no unreasonable stretches (for my hands). The tone is amazing being mostly clear with some chiff. It has a very strong bottom D and is easy to play all the way up and above 2 octaves. The tone and tuning can be pushed pretty easily without 'breaking'.” - Greg Schnider www.chiffandfipple.com
“John O'Brien has really done his homework to produce a great easy-to-play all-rounder with excellent balance between octaves … I would say this is an excellent Low D” - Mikethebook www.chiffandfipple.com
“Wonderful product opens up a whole new world for tin whistle players. Excellent high quality instrument with all of the keys available to you at great price. Well done John O Brien and thank you!” - Pat Murray
"The Setanta low whistle is a beautifully crafted instrument with haunting D and E notes. I'll be playing this low whistle in the wind section of the Irish Video Game Orchestra and can't wait to use it for both classical and traditional Irish music." - Pete Fahy

ABOUT THE MAKER
Setanta Whistles are designed and produced in Dublin, Ireland, by John O’Brien, marrying the latest in precision engineering with the personal handcrafted touch people have become accustomed to expect from top quality Irish brands.
John has spent numerous years playing whistles and uilleann pipes professionally on the road with Riverdance, Celtic Woman and Celtic Thunder (to name but a few) in venues ranging from London's Royal Albert Hall to Carngie Hall and Broadway in New York.
John felt it was time to produce a range of quality instruments specifically designed for the rigours of performing professionally across musical genres from céilí bands to orchestral work. With this in mind, he developed his new range of Setanta whistles featuring a beautifully warm clear tone in all octaves, excellent responsiveness and exceptionally accurate tuning.
One of the main reasons John felt it was important to develop the new range of whistles was to satisfy what he himself as a professional musician was looking for in terms of tuning.
He opted for the highly accurate equal temperament tuning system which allows the individual player to push, pull and bend notes with the minimum of effort.
This has been a labour of love for John but in order to bring his concept from dream to reality he enlisted the expertise of his long time friend, musician, and instrument manufacturer, Paraic McNeela.
This whistle has been precisely engineered featuring a warm balanced tone, excellent responsiveness and highly accurate tuning.

Of the eight I have tried this is my favorite. There are still a couple I would like to try. The tone is very nice and the pitch is excellent. It is very easy to play in the high and low octaves. For me the holes are a little bit tricky to cover but that may not be an issue for most people. Mark

I recently purchased a "Setanta Low D Whistle" from you and have had it for about two weeks. It plays beautifully. The tone is excellent - a calm, even almost hypnotic sound. The response from the low D to the high E" above the staff, (although shrill at the highest registers - that can't be helped) is also excellent. I am new playing/practicing Irish whistles, but not music...I have 46 years of learning music, instruments, performing in many different groups from classical to jazz, solo, even a pipe and drum band. I am still teaching music of all types and styles. My only problem with the Low D Whistle is the reach for the bottom hole. I am getting use it. The air stream is similar to several instruments that I play. The "Sentanta Low D Whistle" is EXCELLENT! in every aspect that I can think of: tambour, intonation, ease of playing, sound projection, even looks. For all that you get with this instrument, the money is very well spent and well worth is the minimal cost.

The Sentanta low-D is a marvel. The tone is beautiful throughout the range. So, is the intonation. I’m particularly impressed with the quality and accuracy of C-natural. That tone on many whistle (most?) is often weak and breathy. Not on the Sentanta. It’s strong and clear. I very much appreciate the attention to detail and craftsmanship in this whistle. The finger holes are nicely beveled for comfortable and accurate playing. I own Burke, MK, Howard and Susato low-D whistles. None come close to the performance and qualities of the Sentanta. A great price for the best low-whistle I’ve ever played! On the basis of this wonderful experience, I'm planning to buy a soprano Sentanta next.

I've owned Alba, MK Pro, and Kerry v5 low D whistles and this is my favorite by far. Has the perfect amount of chiff and breathiness. All the notes are strong including the low D bell note. Holes are on the larger side but easy to adapt too as they are nicely finished.
