Skin:
The skin is the most important part of the Irish bodhrán. That's why we only use the best goatskins. Our skins are sustainably sourced from healthy animals, carefully selected and examined for quality. They produce great depth of sound and are easy to tune. We've done many blind tests and the results are staggering. Even non-bodhrán players can tell the difference between a good quality skin and a poor one - it's that obvious. Our skins are naturally hand-cured in lime, which gives that all-important bass tone, then 'pickled' to close up the pores and finally stretched and left to sun dry, achieving a lovely clean 'bleached' finish.
“Whatever way Paraic cures them and treats them, I can get everything I want out of them. There’s a lovely sound to the them.”Jim Woods talking about our bodhrán goatskin. For a great bodhrán text tutorial, check out The Irish Drum - An Bodhrán by renowned bodhrán player, Peter Houlahan. Good to know:

I wanted an 18" tunable bodhran and after a lot of research ordered one of Paraic's. There weren't any available and I was told that I was on the waiting list. A couple of weeks later I got a call from the man himself to say he had a nice Ashwood one that he thought I would like but needed to put a skin on it. A couple of days later we spoke again and I ordered the now completed drum. This was a Thursday afternoon and it was delivered to me in England on Monday morning! It was very well packed. The drum is beautifully made and finished and has a lovely resonant tone. It's a pleasure to play and I look forward to using it with my band. I would recommend Paraic and his bodhrans to anyone: Craftsman's products for little more than mass produced prices. Thank-you!

This is a finely crafted drum that has a beautiful blooming low end to it. The goatskin is top quality and the tuners make it a breeze to get to my desired pitch. This is my second McNeela Bodhran and I'm sure I'll be back for more.

I never thought tapping a drum could be so frustrating and satisfying at the same time. My hands don't control the beater very well but I don't care.

Bingo! Good Evening Sir: For whatever reason, I cannot type in the boxes from my Android Phone. The drum is excellent & had it out with the Chicago Garda Bagpipe Band over the High Holy Days in a few of the local establishments. It has a great resonance, and is easy to hold and manipulate the back hand. The skin is tough and resilient to even the most aggressive play! As it was said...it puts you in touch with the ancestral pulse... I love it and the ability to adjust the tuning is a huge plus - not to have to worry about the constantly changing moisture content. Great Drum!

This is my third McNeela bodhran, and I was a bit disappointed with the cloth webbing used as banding around the shell. My other two drums had a nicer looking faux leather band attached with brass tacks. The end of the webbing was already fraying upon receipt. The deep bass sound is clear and resonant, which is why I wanted an 18” drum, thanks to McNeela’s exclusive goat skin heads. While I would have preferred a higher quality banding, I will certainly recommend McNeela for your bodhran purchases in the future.

Hi John, sorry to hear about the fraying along the band, the drum shouldn't have been sent in that condition. I'm afraid our QC missed it. We'll be in touch via email to see how we can recompense you for this oversight on our part. Glad to hear that you're still getting that great bass tone from the skin. The 18" is such a classic bodhrán style - a great drum!
