“I bought a print of J W Waterhouse's The Crystal Ball and though I like it very much, I've realised that it's not of the original version of the painting. The original, painted in 1902, had a skull on a table on the left hand side of the image. In the early 1950s, its owner decided he didn't like the skull and had it painted over, to look like the curtain. In the early 1990s, when it was put up for sale, the painting was restored and the skull reinstated. So, this print is taken from the 1950s altered version of the original painting.”
