Mark Rothko Nº.37 & Nº.19 (Slate Blue and Brown on Plum) Supersize Art Reviews

Read King & McGaw Reviews

In 1947 Rothko began to paint a collection of purely abstract works that would establish the artist as one of the biggest names in 20th century art. The works, dubbed multiforms by critics, show large blocks of soft edged rectangles merging. Generally composed of two or three contrasting yet complementary colours the works are designed to overwhelm the viewer, expressing feelings of intense emotion. For Rothko the purpose of art was not to display an experience but rather be an experience in itself, and it is in these works that the artist's philosophy is best displayed. This print is an excellent example of the style of painting with which the artist would become synonymous.

Good delivery service, did not take long after purchasing. I bought the print only and was impressed with the paper quality (good thickness) and colour (rich, not faded). Looking forward to framing and hanging on the wall!
