Carpenter Technology’s Micro-Melt Maxamet is an extraordinary tool steel that was specially formulated to roll red-hot steel billets in Carpenter’s steel mills. Spyderco is the only knife company to have mastered this demanding material well enough to feature it prominently in their production knives. The latest addition to the elite Maxamet family is this Sage 5 Lightweight. It showcases this incredibly hard, ultra-tough material in its full-flat-ground blade and houses it within a lightweight, Bi-Directional Textured handle. All other features are consistent with the standard version of this model, including nested, skeletonized stainless steel liners, a high-strength Compression Lock, injection-molded fiberglass-reinforced-nylon (FRN) scales, and a reversible deep-pocket wire pocket clip.

“Very impressed with this, the maxamet really holds an edge very well, the knife is ergonomic, sturdy with no play and is very fidget friendly. Though I wouldn't under any circumstance suggest taking this out the house as once the lock is disengaged it can be opened with gravity only. Not technically a gravity folder as it does have the compression lock holding the blade closed, but I wouldn't want to try and convince police or the court of that! Great for absolutely shredding through cardboard and not as hard to sharpen as the t'interwebs may have you believe! Though keeping it sharp is definitely a better shout than letting it go blunt then attempting to re-edge it.”
