Hi Vere, Please ensure you have connected a power source to your AV adapter aswell as the HDMI cable, This port is located on the device at the side of the HDMI port & resembles an iPhone 5/6 charging cable, this then needs to be plugged in to a plug socket. Also, it is perfectly normal for you to see a barcode on your screen. If you should see this please refer back to your device and click 'Trust this device'. “Bearing in mind the low cost I didn't expect too much. What I really wanted was a waterproof outdoor watch to replace an old watch, and this one was fine, pretty much as advertised, with one critical exception, battery life - 3-5 days it said. In fact it is 2 days, which really means every day if you want to be sure it won't run out near the end of the 2nd day, so not very convenient, particularly if you are interested in the sleep monitoring function. As for set up, not a lot of help given; my daughter did it for me.”
