“I purchased this batch of meat odes to re treat one of the raised boxes in my pollytunnel after the first batch didn’t appear to clear one of the colonies. I assumed I had watered the mix down to much for that particular watering can full. I could still see some ants at that particular location this morning but less than seen previously. I am wondering if there is particular varieties of ants that the nematodes are not as effective against? I will continue to monitor. The same product last year was very effective.”

Hi, Sorry to hear you haven’t had the results you expected from the product. Nematodes are a biological control, however this means their effectiveness can be limited by several factors: Nematodes require specific environmental conditions to thrive and be effective. They need adequate moisture over the first couple of weeks, moderate temperatures (applying when UV exposure is low) avoiding big drops in temperature overnight below the threshold, and having suitable soil pH levels. Extremes in temperature, dryness, or unfavorable pH can reduce their viability and effectiveness. When applying nematodes you need to use plenty of water ensuring they are spread evenly and fully absorbed ensuring they reach lower depths to reach the pests effectively. Pests can develop a resistance to nematode infection and the overall effectiveness of the control, however, if this is the case we recommend applying another dose to increase the volume of nematodes to overcome the resistance. “I have used these ant nematodes for the second time this year in the raised beds in my pollytunnel and for the first time on the base of my fruit tree espaliers. The nematodes worked really well on the raised beds last year and I am hoping they work the same on my espaliers to prevent ants farming aphids which caused a lot of damage last year.”
