“I've got a solo stove, and recently bought an ozpig series 2 outdoor woodburner and a flamery asado style bbq. With the solo stove i used to burn birch as it came in the packs, but have recently changed to oak. These last much longer, but the downside is that they can come in pretty big pieces and take forever to light and burn through.
It was time to get a log splitter. After doing my research I settled on the Kindling Cracker, original size. I liked how the ring held the wood in place while I whacked it with the sledge hammer. Much safer than an axe and the ring means much less chance of personal injury!
It is a sturdy, solid piece of kit that sits on the ground without needing to be screwed to a base. Sitting the wood in place rather than having to hold it is a big plus. The sledge hammer is just about heavy enough to do most of the work. I think it's a sold 1.5kg. Heavier would have been even better, but it does the job. First few pieces took a few swings to split the wood, but with practice, I got more proficient. Oak's a solid, dense wood, with the pieces of birch I've tried, its more akin to a knife through butter.
The smaller pieces work far better in all of my wood burners and I'm very happy with the product and the outcome.”
“Bought this for my husband for Christmas. He says it deals very well with many types of wood including elm which has been difficult in the past, having a tendency to bounce back. He decided to anchor the frame for extra stability. He is very pleased with the longer handle of the sledge hammer , in comparison to the one he already owns, and would say it's a very well balanced tool.”
