In June 2024, all Year 1 children will have to sit a formal Phonics Screening Test (also known as a 'Phonics Screening Check').
The Phonics Screening Test is a one-to-one assessment given by a teacher that seeks to assess how well they have learned to decode words using phonics. Your child will sit with the teacher and be asked to read 40 words aloud. Some words will be simple and familiar, some will be more complex and some will be 'non-words', 'alien words' or 'invalid words'.
Phonics are complicated. There's a pass mark and if your child doesn't reach it, they'll have to do the test again in 2025. It's scary stuff for kids (and strangely unfamiliar for parents) but it's no problem, Exam Ninja's got you covered!
