Penny Drop Gin is hand crafted in Cornwall and is our (Drink Finder / Constantine Stores) creation, made to a premium criteria set out by owners Mark & Andrew. As an independent wine and spirits specialist we love working with artisan producers and with over 60 years trading in the industry we certainly know our stuff. The result is an outstanding premium Cornish take on the Old Tom style of gin.Why choose an Old Tom as the first release of Penny Drop Gin? Well this style is a little underrated and has so many playful and legendary stories surrounding how it got its name. Our story goes as follows:Targeting unscrupulous distillers, The Gin Act was introduced by parliament back in 1736 which levied a tax on gin. This lead to illegal activities including the notorious Penny Drop. It is said customers would drop a penny into a slot in the wall beneath the sign of a cat. The distiller would pour a shot of gin through a lead pipe directly into the patrons mouth.... But, only after that penny had dropped. What is an Old Tom Gin?Old Tom Gin is slightly sweeter than London Dry gins and drier than Dutch Genever. This is our Cornish take on the historic style that is linked to this legendary story.Penny Drop Gin Old Tom is made with the finest hand selected botanicals, these include juniper berries, coriander seeds, black pepper, cassia bark, vanilla, meadowsweet, lemon peel and seabuckthorn berries harvested here in Cornwall. To raise the sweetness in the profile and reach the classic Old Tom style we have used locally sourced honey from Polwheveral here in Constantine, Cornwall.

The botanicals win through in Penny Drop but are not overwhelming, so this should appeal to many taste buds. It is well balanced for sweetness/dryness. The producers clearly know their stuff. The label is a joy with a great story worth reading.

This gin is exquisite. It is the first time I have tried it but the depth of flavour made it one of the best gins I have tasted. I sampled it neat to appreciate the flavour and then partnered it with a plain Indian tonic and a slice of lemon. One of the best gins I have had in a long time. Has a real quality taste and you can taste all the ingredients too. It is nice to have a slight sweetness, takes away from the sometimes overpowering juniper flavour. Highly recommend!
