The name Gammel Dansk translates as Old Danish. It is a Danish bitters which was first released in 1964, having taken three years to develop, and is hugely popular in its native country. The exact recipe is kept secret but it is known to be made from a blend of 29 different herbs and spices, including bay leaves, ginger, rowan berries, anise, cinnamon, angelica and nutmeg

I bought a bottle of Gammel Dansk because this year, I have been prevented from getting our Christmas supply from taxfree in airports or brought by visitors from Denmark. It reminds me of winter mornings in rural Denmark, having a small bitter snaps with breakfast with my parents or after a cold walk, whilst waiting for lunch ( and my father would always have an extra one). It always made an appearance with breakfast on Christmas day and Boxing Day. We might taste that year's novelty 'christmas bitter snaps', but generally agreed that the old Gammel Dansk, was best.
