We're sorry for any disappointment regarding the gas fire in question.
As you quite rightly mention, the electronic control knob is positioned at the side and towards the bottom of this fire, as can be seen in the images on the product page. We appreciate that this may be more difficult to access for some customers and there are alternative outset gas fires that would have been available with top controls. In instances where customers may have specific requirements, customers are always welcome to contact our Sales team for advice in choosing a fire ahead of ordering.
Regarding the issue experience with the gas burner, if you can contact customerservice@direct-fireplaces.com with a photo or video of the issue and your order number, we would be happy to raise this with the manufacturer and advise further,
