The vehicle provided by SicilybyCar was fully satisfactory, except for one small fault (noted below). We were impressed with the efficiency of the personnel at the desk issuing the car documents. However, our final question to them was “Where do we find the car?” They explained that this was immediately outside the office. This was true in the sense that the car-rental park started just outside the office but it was huge and there was no signposting or indication of which company’s cars were where. Eventually, by walking some way across the carpark and unpacking my binoculars, I managed to spot the SicilybyCar cabin about a kilometre away. I left my wife with all our luggage. (We are getting a bit old now and unfortunately baggage trolleys were not available at Olbia airport.) Then I headed across the huge carpark towards SicilybyCar. Just before I reached it, a high fence blocked my way with no way through apparent. There was a building at the corner of the fence, and I managed to climb this, and jump over the fence. Unfortunately, the top of the fence tore the sleeve of my shirt and gashed my arm. At the SicilybyCar shed, I was able to ascertain that, if one drove to the far end of the fence, there was a gate, through which one could return to the vicinity of the office (and my wife and luggage). It would seem blindingly obvious that SicilybyCar should run off copies of a simple sketch map showing the route to their cars, stressing that one has to walk along two sides of a square, and indicating the distance, so that one does not attempt to drag heavy luggage. The small fault on the car was that the button on the dashboard to open the fuel-filler usually took several pushes before the cap opened. This became worse during the trip, so that on May Day, the button became totally non-functional no matter how many times it was pressed. To fill the fuel tank, the locked cap had to be forced off (leaving the self-sealing tube in place. Fortunately, it seems that our insurance covered the damage that the car had to have self-inflicted on itself. I guess that such problems tend to occur when staff rarely drive the cars that they hire out.
