The L98A2 Military Training Aid is a useful and detailed training weapon designed to assist instructors to help improve skill at arms. With the L98A2 training weapon aid, members of the army and cadet forces who cannot obtain regular access to armouries can practice weapon handling and drill knowledge in a safe environment.This version of the L98A2 training weapon is manufactured using high-quality wood materials and is laser engraved on the right side. It additionally features similar dimensions and centre of balance to a regular L98A2 rifle. Furthermore, sling loops can be fitted, allowing cadets to practice sling fitting and removal.As well as an essential practice weapon, the L98A2 army training aid can be used to teach parts of the rifle, firing positions and weapons drills to cadets, without all the security and administration requirements of a real L98A2 or DP weapons. “As a whole it does help practicing for weapon handling tests and drills etc. but i paid near £34.95 for a basic wooden rifle cut out which is only etched on the right face. Not a huge issue as you should know what mechanisms are on the left side and where they’re roughly placed but for the price I’d look at other models.”

“Bought this to enable cadets to practice fitting a sling (purchased separately), plus fieldcraft and drill at detachment. Would have been better if it was laser etched on both sides, rather than just the RHS, but that's not a big issue. Overall, a good product.”

“Now this will be an interesting review, I’ll not comment on the current position relating to official permission to use these at cadet units – that is for the cadet forces themselves to decide. Instead I’ll look at these from the angle of what they are, a wooden cut out training aid in the shape of the L98A2, and what uses they may be put to within a cadets context. When it arrived in the post I surprised by just how thin it was, yes the dimensions are shown on the website but it’s not until you hold one you realise fully how thin they are! It’s also very light, a fraction of the weight of the actual L98A2 – now that may seem obvious but it’s still worth pointing out! The whole thing is cut from a single piece of ply wood and the edges are smooth and having been laser cut are black, if you get close enough you can smell a slight burnt wood smell on them. One side of it (the side with the cocking handle on) has various details etched onto it while the other side is blank. The etched details are very good and allow you to identify the parts shown on that side, which could be useful during a lesson to learn the parts of the L98A2. You could even colour these in to highlight them or use it as part of a wall mounted display showing the parts. All in all it’s a well made and sturdy item that should cope with normal use with ease. Another possible use for them is as a prop during Fieldcraft lessons. I’m sure most people have been teaching various parts of the Fieldcraft syllabus at individual units with cadets pretending to hold a rifle or possibly holding a stick! Having a few of these training aids available would allow cadets to hold an effective prop while training without having to worry about a lack of actual L98A2’s I would still recommending ensuring they behave correctly with them as even though they are a wooden training aid if they pick up bad weapon handling habits with anything resembling the L98A2 it may cause problems later. It may also be worth painting parts of them in a bright colour to show they are only a training aid. Another possible use for them is in the teaching of rifle drill. Now I have seen wooden props used like this before however they are not ideal as they do not weigh the same as an actual L98A2 and being thinner as well you hold them differently. That said as long as the differences are noted and pointed out and cadets also get introduced to rifle drill with proper L98A2’s during the same session they may have a use as a teaching aid in this area. So, would I recommend them? I would, although there is a big however along with that! As long as there is permission for their use at units I can seem them being a useful support to training. I wouldn’t want to see them used as the only thing cadet’s train with but as a wooden training aid used to aid training I can see a use for them as long as their limitations and differences to the L98A2 are taken into account. Also, for an individual getting one to practice at home, I would again say that they can be useful – not many people will have a replica L98A2 at home to practice with!
