About Billingham:

Billingham are a family owned company, manufacturing camera bags for the world’s photographers since 1973 alongside a range of leisure and laptop bags. All bags are made in the West Midlands area of England, a region famous for manufacturing. A core reason for Billingham’s longevity is the fact that from the start, the Billingham family were determined that their products would always be made to the very highest standards from the best available materials to provide high levels of protection for their valued contents.

A notable feature of Billingham camera bags is that they are made from a distincive 3-layer waterpoof canvas that never needs reproofing. They also feature genuine top grain leather and solid brass details.

Like any premium product, the quality of materials, design and craftsmanship that goes into creating a Billingham means that it represents a significant investment. It’s important that they don’t just look beautiful, but that they do their job of protecting equipment wherever they are and whatever they’re being used for – year in and year out.

I quite like this camera backpack, but there are some problems with it. I liked the overall format and the design of the camera insert. Plenty of space for my small DSLR and about 3-4 additional lenses, including an f2.8 zoom. after packing the insert there is some room on top for a small jacket, or possibly some snacks, and the front flap has a good flat pocket that is useful for maps or guidebooks. The front pouch is a good size and has plenty of room for spare batteries, chargers, and all sorts of other stuff. The problems were really when carrying it. The straps are not that comfortable, and I find that the bag carries rather awkwardly on the back. at 15 inches tall it's not a very tall bag, but instead of attaching the shoulder straps at the top, they are attached about 2 inches down, which shortens the effective back length. It also changes the weight distribution of the bag a bit, making it feel like it is leaning back all the time. When adjusted to carry on my upper back it's relatively comfortable, but when walking the bag tends to ride down a bit, and the shoulder straps slide down my shoulders. The only mitigation for this is to tighten the shoulder straps to an uncomfortably tight degree. I think it would have been better to attach the straps nearer the top of the bag, and possibly closer together, to try and prevent the straps from sliding apart. i did ask Billingham if they would modify the bag for me, but they declined. Overall very well made, but not very well designed. I would like to see a larger, taller bag in the same format with perhaps a padded back panel, which would make to bag more useful when not carrying the insert. option full width or half width camera inserts like the Hadley One would be good also.

I will mostly use my 35 rucksack for carrying a mirrorless camera kit, as well personal items such as wallet and phone, as well as a tablet. However, sometimes I shoot 35 mm film. Having a camera bag that allows me easily to snap out the camera insert and use the bag itself as a shelter for loading and unloading film is brilliant. I fully expect my 35 rucksack to meet the same standards of wear and tear and protection as my Hadley Pro small, which I have dragged through rain and untold muck, as well shoved under countless commuter airplane seat with nary a significant scratch or blemish to the bag in addition to perfect preservation of my gear. And though I suppose it's but a minor thing, leave it to Billingham to design what amounts to an elegant rucksack.
