About Billingham:

Billingham are a family owned company, manufacturing camera bags for the world’s photographers since 1973 alongside a range of leisure and laptop bags. All bags are made in the West Midlands area of England, a region famous for manufacturing. A core reason for Billingham’s longevity is the fact that from the start, the Billingham family were determined that their products would always be made to the very highest standards from the best available materials to provide high levels of protection for their valued contents.

A notable feature of Billingham camera bags is that they are made from a distincive 3-layer waterpoof canvas that never needs reproofing. They also feature genuine top grain leather and solid brass details.

Like any premium product, the quality of materials, design and craftsmanship that goes into creating a Billingham means that it represents a significant investment. It’s important that they don’t just look beautiful, but that they do their job of protecting equipment wherever they are and whatever they’re being used for – year in and year out.

My boyfriend bought me the Billingham 335 Nytex with tan leather straps for Christmas 2000. A trip to London and a visit to Harrods prompted me to look at bigger bags. I’d been using an f5.6 since 1994. Over the years my trusty 335 has been twice around the world and simply doesn’t look it. I’ve changed from Canon F1 to Nikon F2 then Leicaflex SL then Leica R8 bodies (two of each one plus a couple of lenses. Plenty of room for a Filofax Deskfax in the front zipped pocket and the back zipped pocket carries a newspaper (usually the New York Times to read on a plane). The bag is small enough for carry on luggage provided one doesn’t stuff it. Carrying it by the side handles reduces its girth. I get 10 rolls of film plus four pairs of batteries and various oddments around the bag. Of course I also wear a Belstaff canvas safari jacket with lots of pockets too. A 445 or 555 or 550 would be too big with wasted space. The 550 doesn’t have my front zipper for the workbook. They wouldn’t let me board the plane with anything larger. What I really like about Billingham, apart from the fact it’s 100% British is the fact that they will repair and renovate their products. So much is ‘made in China’. Billingham isn’t.

I recently purchased the Billingham 335 Camera Bag a couple of weeks ago with the intention for holding all the necessary gear for a long weekends away. I was impressed with the overall quality and weather proofing of the FibreNyte Material out and about in the UK. In fact, I prefer this material over the natural canvas. The size of the 335 is perfect for any photography trips away, where you need to carry a extensive amount of camera gear and the other personal tech accessories to stay connected these days. But, I personally would recommend purchasing two Delta Pouches to provide the extra capacity to carry items for quick access. Overall, the build quality is amazing and I am pleased with my purchase. The online shopping experience when placing orders and the customer care over the phone is outstanding to resolve any queries I had when I was considering which size bag would suit my needs.
