Firstly, this is a very good offset smoker. The metal is very thick (the unit weighs 130KG), it holds its heat well and overall the design is excellent. I'm looking forward to seeing how it fares in the English winter. It's very similar to some Oklahoma Joe offsets that you can get in the US. I would have awarded full marks but there are a couple of issues which let it down: 1. The firebox door has a lip. - This is not the end of the world but it does make it a bit fiddly to sweep out the ash once the unit has cooled down. It also makes it exceedingly hard to do so when doing a long cook (6-9 hours) and your ashes have really started to build up from falling through the grate. 2. The doors don't fit completely flush with the body. - The issue with this is that with air-leakage via the doors you'll find it harder to control the temperature/fire via the dampers. Now, that said, even if the doors were totally flush you'd still likely get a fair bit of leakage so do yourself a favour and get some gasket tape. I went on Google and got some "Pro Smoke BBQ FireBlack Gasket/Heat Seal For Weber Kettle". Does the job very nicely. Just don't put the tape along the top of the doors or it'll just increase the gap along the other edges (found out the hard way). 3. The grates (cooking and firebox) all have an enamel coating which you have to be pretty careful about cleaning. I talked to Landmann on the phone and they recommended a copper-brush (not steel). I got one of those from Landmann and it still caused some chips of the enamel. That said, there's no reason why you can't get some third-party steel grates. The bundle itself is good value for money. The charcoal is of good quality and excellent chunk-size for long smokes). The fire starters are also good too. The chimney starter could do with being a bit wider but I feel that's a US vs UK thing. The choice of woods chunks has pros and cons: the choice of chunks rather than chips is excellent for long smokes. However, the choice of mesquite as the wood is strange as it doesn't tend to one you would primarily use. Typically one would add it in small amounts with another wood as the main. I haven't tried the Jack Daniels wood chips yet but, then, I have a bottle on the shelf so who needs it, eh?
