Buy Basque Gernika Peppers from Basco. Our fresh Gernika Peppers are from a variety called Derio which are grown just outside San Sebastian in the Basque Country.
They are hand picked and bagged to order so that we can ensure you always receive our Gernika Peppers fresh from the producer. Each bag of Gernika Peppers contains 24 peppers.
Our Gernika Peppers are also called Pimientos de Gernika and they are not to be confused with Padron Peppers. They are uniform in colour, with a light shine. They are between 6 and 9 cm in length, the shape of the fruit is triangular, long and skinny; the apex, pointed; and the stalk, whole, thin and long. It's texture is taut, not loose, without wrinkles or symptoms of dehydration, that is why they look and smell so fresh.
On the palate, Gernika Peppers are far more superior than Padron Peppers. Their flavour is meaty, very fresh and sweet, leaving a long lasting sensation in the mouth.
There is a lot of fraud in the Spanish green pepper sector, with producers from Morroco and South America selling their peppers as Padron or Gernika. These peppers are shorter, wider and don't have the same texture or flavour. Do not accept immitations.
Never serve Gernika Peppers as a garnish, always as a main plate or tapas dish. They are perfect fried (after making a small slit so they don't explode in your kitchen) for less than a minute on each side. Then drain and salt.
