Habelas Hailas Orujo Blanco - Spanish Transparent Pomace Brandy (40% abv) Reviews

4.7 Rating 15 Reviews
Read Basco Fine Foods Reviews

Habelas Hailas Orujo Blanco: A colorless and fiery Spanish brandy, obtained from the distillation of marc, the solid remains left from the wine-making process. Known for its strength and slightly herbal, sinus-clearing qualities, orujo blanco is a popular variation of orujo, a pomace brandy from northern Spain. With an alcohol content over 40% abv, this white orujo is often added to coffee for an extra kick or served hot as part of the traditional 'queimada' in Galicia. Enjoy the distinctive taste of this Spanish spirit.

Very similar to grappa, lovely flavours once the initial burn fades.

I have tried very few examples of Orujo, and this is the first bottle I’ve purchased. I am very familiar with Grappa, which has some similarities. This Orujo has a fine, fruity bouquet. The taste is also fruity, which is very welcome, but it has an aftertaste which I am not too sure about. It may just take a bit of time to appreciate it, and it wouldn’t put me off trying other examples, but it was a bit unexpected. The price, however, is very reasonable, making it affordable to try. I’d like to hear the views of an Orujo expert on this bottling.

I have been a fan of orujo blanco for many a year, and it has recently almost replaced anís dulce or a sol y sombra as my preferred accompaniment to a post-lunch or -dinner café solo or cortado, together, of course, with the obligatory glass of water. The Habelas Hailas orujo we purchased in our last order from Basco Fine Foods is a quality product, smooth with a very subtle peppery aftertaste and mercifully free of that slight greasiness that you can occasionally find in some varieties of its Italian counterpart, grappa, or similar grape-based spirits from other countries. I like it on its own (without ice - I am of that generation), but for those who don't like spirits on their own it could equally mix to good effect more directly with coffee, from the the humble but warming carajillo to the festive queimada and still delight the palate. It can also bring cheer on those rainy days, reminding us after a few sips that ' hasta la lluvia es arte'. The price too is very reasonable. given what some importers charge.

Really good. Greatly enjoyed by my friends after dinner a few nights ago. A real taste to remind me of last summer in Galicia.

Slightly different to the other Orujo Blanco I've tried over the years this one seems to have a slight floral scent. Was bought as a gift and was asked - "Where can I buy this?" So a success.
