I live in South western Alberta Canada and work on the east slopes of the rocky mountains. Weather temperatures can change from -30+deg C to above freezing in a matter of minutes. We have long cold spells of negative twenty and lower with harsh winds, brutal wind chills, blowing snow, zero visibility. Such conditions can be counted on winter after winter. I have a go to wool sweater that I basically ware every day during the winter months when working and have for literally decades. I have always wanted a thicker wool sweater to use when it pummels like -18 to -38 and colder yearly. I just couldn’t find one that came close to the grade of my old sweater as thin as it is. In the oil patch folks work outside pretty much no matter what. Good gear is not for “looks”. In my case gear has always been the only thing preventing me from freezing to death on the side of a mountain snowmobiling, to working a 21 day hitch on the rigs someplace on the bare prairie with not a tree in sight, to hauling dangerous goods with super B tankers chaining up every trip. Here gear is life and death to my profession. Fire Retardant gear is mandatory. Your wool provides a natural, non synthetic, layer that insulates supremely both ways and is naturally retardant. I have to ware chemical retardant outer layers and even base layers to prevent synthetics melting into your flesh in a flash fire. I have found My Boatneck sweater is so insulating and breathable that I feel comfortable when ever I am in it no matter what. Sleep in it on the couch to driving while operating equipment I have fallen in love with the new piece and also love the marine wool cap I couldn’t resist ordering with it. Both pieces are simply perfect in form, functionality, and even fashion I would argue. The sweater looks good. It feels good and as mentioned insulates regulating temperature and breathing perfectly. Amazing what our ancestors achieved in the design. The thumb hole and boat neck perfectly deal with the extra bulk of the heavy wool nitt. I remeber my grandfather had a different style sweater that you now make which he had as long as i can remember. I’m not sure if my grandmother nitt it but she had old spinning wheels from the farm that they used on the farm. Now that I have discovered Arthur Beale I am already saving for my next order. There are two or three products I can now justify having worn my first Arthur B daily since it was delivered. Winter has been ferocious so far this year and your sweater has kept me so comfortable that it still ceases to amaze me. I don’t know why more people don’t know about wool. One thing I like about the old sweater I have had for years is the natural oils have always kept it fresh. I rarely have to wash it. Your wool is the same but thicker and heavier than my old sweater. It is exactly what I hoped it would be and has in fact exceeded my expectations. Now let’s talk discounting a cap for sweater orders to canada (half price would be nice!) And then there is the shipping and exchange rates! Not to complain too much but by the time canadian dollar exchange rate hits a person on this side of the pond your gear is truly premium. I appreciate that it’s worth it but charging for shipping hurts after the math is done for canadians. If the Yanks get free shipping how about us fellow Commonwealth Canucks? Either way I will be buying many more sweaters although the one I have from you now would be the only one I would need to get through the rest of my life. I Appreciate you folks so much and actually think that out load at work from time to time usually when the wind is blowing 120km on the side of a mountain with wind chills -40 and a load of petroleum product to put on my rig. I also say that when the house is drafty and i am napping on the couch with sports on. I can live in that sweater all winter long. It makes me happy. Put one on and you will be happy too! please note I have taken the time to write all of this because I hardly ever write reviews but when i do it is because I have been inspired to do so. Inspiration is rare so please know my words are on my honour.

After spending the last 3 weeks working between Shetland and Mull, with the wind cutting me in two and chilling me to my soul, I decided I needed to invest in a new warm gear. After spending much time online looking at various companies and speaking to Norwegian crew members for their advice (always buy Norwegian) I settled on a Arthur Beale Erebus boat neck pullover, it wasnt the cheapest I had looked at, but by god Im glad I chose it. The first thing I noticed was the weight, by far heavier than anything I had previously owned. The wool is luxuriously thick and the garment just hugs you when you wear it. Last night the temperature dropped to -6 with a gentle breeze. Whilst my fellow mates where cocooned in multiple layers restricting normal limb functions I wore my jumper. I never felt the slightest bit chilly during the night, apart from my hands and face. I cannot praise it enough at the moment, I only wish I had bought one years ago. I have yet to test it in spray or drizzle conditions, but Im thinking I wont be dissappointed. I have been so impressed with it that I have bought one for my wife, who feels the cold regardless of how much oil she burns for the heating. If you are reading this and are having second thoughts because of the cost, take a chance on my review. I do not think you will regret it. The Erebus is worth its weight in gold. Thankyou Arthur Beale and sorry it has taken me so long to join the party. Mike (toasty and happy)
