I purchased the IQ Air GC multigas in February 2024. It is an extremley expensive device, and I had wanted it for my children's room during some decoration as they have mild asthma and could be sensitive. Upon turning it on, a smell eminated from the purifier - a slightly sweet, musty and almost sweaty smell. It was not immediately pungent but it slowly permeated the room and was noticable throughout the home; in particular within the closed space of a room. As somone who has never had an active - carbon filter, and having tried to find the cause online, I put it down to initial off-gassing and a need to clear the filter through running it. Big mistake. By giving it the benefit of the doubt I ultimately ran it for hours to try and clear the smell, then put it to one side with occasional use to see if there was any change and unfortunately forgot about it due to other matters. Now, 14 months on, the smell remains. Further research tells me a smell is common with this filter - but it appears that the smell is difficult to articulate for many people so I can't be sure it is exactly the same issue. It may in fact be slightly different each time, but for such an expensive piece of equipment this is still a big concern - if the smell does not disappear. Some people online say this issue is due to filter saturation caused by some packaging (allegedly admitted to by IQ Air in correspondence). Others say it may have happened in transit. Who knows? But, I have ran isolation tests on my device and the issue is clearly the filter as upon removal the smell disappears. I can actually smell a slight odour from within the filters themselves, although it is not so obvious in room until the device is blowing air out. It can become nauseating after a while: think of sitting next to someone with bad body odour. It'd be good to know what smell others experience. Is it the same issue? I am now unable to exchange the filter even though it has over 4000 hours left on it, due to time having passed. I have been offered a discount on a new filter but I would still have to pay 2-300 pounds when I have had no real use out of the device and original filters after spending so much on them. So, a few lessons learned that may help others: 1. Think carefully about buying the purifier itself as it locks you into high cost accessories. I am sure it can be a great device, but don't assume because it is expensive it must be great and there cannot be faults (as i did). 2. If there is any issue whatsover with the filter, once bought I.e., an unexplained odour after a period running, return it immediately! Don't wait as I did and be left with an expensive shell on rollers, with my only option to pay another 300 pounds to see if that helps! I am not blaming Allergy Cosmos here as it was my naivety that made me assume that the smell would dissipate and disappear after running it, and my delay in acting on this left me without any statutory rights, it seems. However, there does seem to be a known issue with this product (multi gas filter) that should be more widely explained to ensure people are fully informed on making a purchase of this amount. Google is a useful tool for research on this. Currently my 100 pound purifier is in my children's room and doing a great -odourless - job. It makes you think. What is the added value?

Hello Fraser, Thank you for your feedback. We're sorry to hear that your experience with the IQAir GC MultiGas has not met your expectations. This system is one of the most widely deployed and extensively tested gas-phase air purifiers available, used across healthcare, laboratory, and domestic environments in the UK and internationally. It is trusted specifically for its performance in managing chemical pollutants, odours, and gases, and has a strong reputation among individuals with sensitivities such as asthma or multiple chemical sensitivity. Unfortunately, as your initial concerns were raised more than a year after purchase, it was not possible to inspect the unit or filters in their early state, when we could have better assessed their condition and provided further advice. We do, however, appreciate your acknowledgement that the delay in reporting the issue limited the available options. The IQAir GC MultiGas remains one of the leading solutions for air purification in settings where chemical and odour control are critical. Filters can become saturated in two main ways: either by exposure to very high levels of pollutants over a short period of time (such as during building work or the use of strong solvents), or by prolonged use over time in moderately contaminated environments. Once the media has absorbed a certain amount of pollutants, the capacity to hold further gases reduces. In some situations, the filter may begin to emit a detectable odour as a result. This is not indicative of a fault, but instead of a filter that has reached or is approaching the end of its service life for your specific environment. Thank you again for your comments. We will continue to take feedback like yours seriously as we support customers in making fully informed decisions about high-performance air purification. Kind regards, Allergy Cosmos
