IQAIR GC VOC AIR PURIFIER: An MCS Focussed Review for the MCS community. The IQAir GC VOC air purifier is very similar to the GC Multigas. They're both in the GC range. They are both gas air purifiers, (and not so great at particle filtration.) If you haven't already, then check out my previous review of the GC Multigas. I like the GC VOC. Its better than the GC Multigas for my purposes. You'd think it wouldn't be... The GC Multigas has activated carbon, and impregnated alumina in its gas filters. However, the GC VOC purifier, has only got the activated carbon in its gas filter. So there is no 'impregnation.' Why does this matter? As far as I can see, 'impregnation' is when they add a chemical to the carbon or alumina. The chemical reacts to neutralize formaldehyde or ammonia chemicals. IQAir uses impregnated alumina to protect you against formaldehyde based chemicals in offgassing paints and building materials. Their impregnated carbon protects you against ammonia in cleaning products and some perfumes. It makes fantastic air purifiers. However, there is a downside to the impregnation. I, and others with MCS, have found that these impregnation chemicals make IQAir filters quite smelly. Plus, some people's MCS means they react to the extra chemicals in the filters. Sometimes, more is less. So while it is a fantastic air purifer, I can't say the GC Multigas was suitable for everyone. This GC VOC, however, is suitable for everyone. When I first turned it on, it smelled a little bit. More of a dusty smell than anything chemical. I expected this would happen, because all GC carbon filters have a lot of loose carbon dust falling out of them. It takes a while to blow out and settle down. This is a big negative, the same as it was for the Multigas. Its inherrent in the GC series design. The gas filtration cyclinders are made of a mesh, filled with the media. And its able to fall out through the mesh. The only thing holding it in, is once you put a rather primitive 'sleeve' post-filter over it. This post-filter isn't HEPA, and it isn't professionally fitted. Instead, you manually pull them over the cyclinders, like you would put on a sock. And there is a seam down the middle. But unlike the GC Multigas which smelled for weeks, the GC VOC settles down really quickly. And it is NOT a chemical smell. This is a big relief. Because unless something is actually faulty, there is a no returns policy with Allergy Cosmos. The GC VOC contains pure, chemically neutral, activated carbon, and lots of it. I live in a shared house, and my landlord is notorious for putting obviously incompatible housemates in with us. As you can imagine, this means plenty of opportunities to put air purifiers through their paces. Vastly strong smells are everywhere, whether its the vomit aftersmell of cumin, the greasy charcoaling smell of zero kitchen hygeine, or the nose sandpapering of too much curry powder, the GC VOC seems to be handling it. But please note, by 'handling it,' I mean 'within the boundaries of appropriate expectation.' Note the principles of physics. Gas expands to fill any space that contains it. If there is a constant release of gas into the air, then it will still be in the air, regardless of the air purifier. Its not like the offensive smells conveniently expand only into the air purifier's intake. That would be nice. In practice, air purifiers reduce the gasses. They don't eliminate them. Always remember that. The house I live in doesn't have a 'new smell' problem, so no offgassing paint. And perfume is less of a problem. Right now its offensive burning particles. So the GC VOC is best for me. If you live in a newly decorated house, maybe you would want to get the GC Multigas. Or if you live somewhere with huge amounts of cleaning fluid all the time, you might want to get the GC AM. But for regular, everyday use, I would say the GC VOC is the best of the GC series. For people with MCS, its your safest bet.
