We are just back from an absolutely wonderful walking holiday in South Africa. After a couple of days enjoying Cape Town and the Cape Peninsula, we enjoyed a week's hiking in the incredible Cederberg, staying in superb accommodation at Kromrivier and with our fantastic guides Frank Dwyer and Ray Leverson. We followed this with something very different, walking the Green Mountain Trail based out of the superb Wildekrans guesthouse. Throughout our trip, we stayed in wonderful accommodation with welcoming and helpful hosts and enjoyed great food, great wines and the very best company. Angus at Walks in Africa was critical in planning this holiday with us and took lots of time to understand our needs and make suggestions. I feel sure that we will be doing another walking holiday with you soon.

We're just back from a fantastic 4 week trip to South Africa including a 170km walk along the Drakensberg escarpment from Sentinel Peak to the Sani Pass. The route was just so spectacular and we didn't see another tourist until we arrived at the highest pub in Africa on the Sani Pass. Zee, our Zuku lady guide was great and she and the porters belting out Nkosi Sikelel' above a sea of clouds on South Africas' highest peak was quite something. Everything was perfectly organised by Walks in Africa including two resupply trips. This is the third time we have used Walks in Africa and every time has been brilliant - Angus' attention to detail is spot on, nothing is left to chance.

Walks in Africa created an outstanding four-part trip combining trekking, wildlife viewing, and relaxation. We started at the Cavern Resort for a few day hikes and great meals. Then we did our 15-day Drakensberg trek covering 100 miles of fantastic scenery and clear skies of stars and the Milky Way. Next, we relaxed at the Moorcroft Lodge and Oyster Box, both wonderful rooms, views, and meals. Finally, we did 4 days of safaris at the fantastic Leopard Mountain Lodge in the Manyoni Reserve: cheetahs, lions, hippos, rhinos and other mammals; numerous bird species including owls and eagles; and wonderful & warm people providing various services.

Angus organised a 6 day, 5 night hiking trip in the Northern Drakensberg for myself and my daughter, followed by a tour of the Zulu and Boer war battlefields and a safari for myself and my husband. The whole trip was meticulously organised and the level of detail provided before the trip filled me with confidence. I wasn’t disappointed. Angus recommended and booked a fabulous guide for our trek - Zee with her team of porters and a cook. This was our first time camping and we both thoroughly enjoyed it and would definitely do another camping trip. Waking up in such majestic surroundings and knowing that we were not going to see anyone else was magical. Following the hiking trip we met up with my husband at Three Tree Hills lodge. This was a fabulous recommendation from Angus - one of the best places I have stayed. My daughter then returned to the UK and we continued our holiday with a stay at Fugitive’s Drift and then Phinda game reserve. Both were excellent places - we very much enjoyed the battlefields tours and saw all the big 5 at Phinda. I cannot recommend Walks in Africa enough. The planning and attention to detail was superb and we had a memorable holiday. A great way to celebrate turning 60!

Walks in Africa prepared a 19 day itinerary in S Africa based around a 6 day supported trek through the Drakensberg Mts. The team was fantastic, led by ~ee, a larger than life Zulu lady guide and her team of Zulu porters and cook. Lovely people and spectacular scenery - now wishing we'd done the whole Drakensberg Traverse. Following the trek we had a couple of days in the area of the Zulu and Boer wars battlefields. Another great guide to the battles of Isandlwala and Rorkes Drift - his great grandfather had fought at Isandlwala. Then on to Imfolozi reserve for some game viewing including a couple of days wilderness walking camping at Mpila - a great experience and the bush knowledge of the guides is quite amazing. Highly recommended. The trip finished in the Manyoni reserves and the luxurious Leopard Mountain Lodge where a pride of lions walking between the chalets added some extra excitement. I cannot thank Walks in Africa enough. They have been great from the beginning - everything they suggested worked out spectacularly. Post covid travel in S Africa is very easy - we're already planning our next visit.

I can’t recommend Angus and Walks in Africa highly enough. His personal knowledge of South Africa means that the places he recommends to stay, the guides he uses for hiking and the routes he provides for driving from place to place, are fantastic. He takes the time to find out what matters to you and what your budget is, before coming up with an itinerary that is perfect for you. Whatever you THINK you want to do, I would recommend listening to what Angus suggests as you will have wonderful experiences that you didn’t know existed! Our holiday was at VERY short notice and he created a wonderful itinerary that we couldn’t have hoped to put together without his specialist knowledge. A huge thank you from us both Angus.

Our 5.5 day trek in the Drakensberg Mts of S. Africa was very well planned and the supporting documents gave very complete information on what to expect as well as what to bring. Everything ran very smoothly and the friendly and easy going local female Zulu guide kept us very well informed about all the local flora & fauna we encountered as well as going over the trek plan for each day. The team of porters gave excellent support and made sure we arrived at a fully set up camp each afternoon, with a hot drink ready and waiting. The fine weather was an added bonus that made the trip even more special and memorable.

Angus of Walks in Africa provided a personalised service to provide a wonderful Trek in the Drakensberg for my wife and I which we were able to combine with our own independent travels in S Africa. His practical counsel and detailed information was invaluable. All logistics worked smoothly. The trek with our mountain guide, Zee, and her crew was a superb adventure. Highly recommended!

The whole trip was totally excellent! Angus was very patient with all our questions and worked hard to satisfy our requests. All the logistics worked very smoothly; the car, plane boat was always on time, ready to take us to the next destination. The accommodations were all excellent, very comfortable and with outstanding service. The food was amazing! My special requests (vegetarian, no onions) were scrupulously honored. There was excellent variety in the food, generous quantities and excellent quality. We were amazed at the delicious meals baked in the underground ovens! But really the most outstanding feature of the trip was the high quality staff, especially the guides. They all knew the area really well and were very patient identifying birds for us non-birders. Jason Alfonsi especially was amazing in his ability to track animals, identify insects, lead us to interesting plants and encourage us to try new things, like eating bits of trees and sneaking up on lions. Everyone we met was very friendly, encouraging, well-informed and professional. Probably the best indication of our enthusiastic satisfaction is the fact that we have already signed up to travel again in 2019 with Walks in Africa.

My daughter and I were lucky enough to be guided by Zee into the Drakensberg Mtns. There is not sufficient words to describe how amazing our trip, and guide, were. My time with my daughter and Zee will be forever in my memory. I would hike in those mountains, and with those women, again and again. Thanks to Angus for a thorough, well planned trip. All our needs were met and our expectations exceeded.

Angus was an absolute pleasure to deal with from beginning to end. All queries were responded to very quickly. He put together a fantastic itinerary for us - Drakensberg hike with a great guide and porters, Imfolozi wilderness trail and the unforgettable Leopard Mountain. from what to pack to, what weather to expect, detailed directions and driving times - everything was covered. we had the best holiday and would have no hesitation in highly recommending Angus to anyone considering travel in Southern Africa.

Great itinerary ideas - the service which included many discussions felt very personal. A big favourite of ours was the guided walk in the Drakensburg - spectacular trail with a very experienced guide up to Tugela Falls. Every stage of the journey was detailed including driving instructions, country dossiers etc so being well informed allowed us to enjoy Africa. A varied trip which we thoroughly enjoyed, we would recommend Angus highly and hope to revisit in the future - Many thanks

Extremely good communication from start to finish, clear & timely. Had lots of knowledge of not only the country but also of the people, customs etc which was very helpful in the dossiers. Great itinerary ideas on the website - we were not disappointed with any aspect of the trip. The information allowed us the confidence to travel by car etc which we felt totally enhanced our trip and gave us a feel for real Africa. Thankyou Angus - we will look you up again !

The advice given and accommodation options presented were very good. Knowledge of the area we were travelling to was excellent; local contacts and guides, whether arranged privately, or through the places we stayed, more than met our expectations. We would not have had as good a holiday without Walks in Africa's advice and planning.

Angus Maclaren at Walks in Africa has put together a holiday itinerary for us every year since 2010, in fact, he organised 2 holidays for us in 2013. This review is of our most recent trip to Africa and I can only say that it was just brilliant! We had been to the South Luangwa National Park in a previous holiday that Angus arranged for us. That was in the dry season. After that trip, Angus recommended that we try the same location in the rainy season. So, that is what we did in January 2017. We had 8 nights in 3 lodges run by one of the top local safari specialist companies followed by 3 nights in a boutique hotel in Johannesburg. This was another fantastic holiday. Angus does much of his research in person by visiting the locations that he subsequently advises upon. He uses only the best local agents to match the superb attention to detail in his own planning and, as with all the others, this holiday went exactly according to plan. We were very well treated everywhere. Our guides were exceptional and I cannot muster a negative out of the whole trip. Even the rainy season weather was relatively kind to us! Highlights: 1. An elephant up a tree – well, sort of! 2. Following a female leopard and her year-old cub along a track 3. The beauty of the location of Luangwa River Camp 4. The walking safaris in the lush, green bush landscape 5. Dinner on the riverside Nsefu 6. Sundowner at Nsefu while watching the most beautiful sunset over the river 7. My full English breakfast out in the bush near Nkwali 8. The sighting of “Ginger”, a huge male lion with a ginger mane Thank you again, Angus, for putting together a terrific holiday for us . . . .

Just back from a walking trip to South Africa . In a word , superb! From pickup in joburg airport to drop off 16 days later Angus organised everything ; driver , guides- excellent, hikes - superb, hotels - varied from very good to luxurious. Highlights; great hikes in drakensbergs, climbing cathedral peak (tough), game walks in rhino ridge , walking in Swaziland. Downsides ; some long drives , some long nights (well the wine is very good !) Couldn't recommend Walks in Africa highly enough . Angus' attention to detail and local knowledge was amazing .

Fantastic trail and it felt a little bit like a survival course at times, with the elements we experienced. Getting chased by a hippo and a black rhino, crossing a swollen river after the downpour, and watching a pack of wild dogs rip apart an Impala were some of the highlights. The park was filled with White Rhino and although we didn't see any wild cats, we certainly heard them at night. A word of caution, if you are expecting a 'Walking Safari' you will be disappointed as this is more of walking trail whereby we walk a set path and any wildlife we see is a bonus. I would definitely recommend it to others. A once in a lifetime experience and superb value for money, considering especially all the detailed support 'Walks in Africa' gave us.
