"Minelab Manticore Review: The Ultimate All-Rounder and Celtic Gold Hunter
After months of intensive detecting across the Czech countryside, I can confidently call the Minelab Manticore the best value-for-money detector on the market today. While it sits at a premium price point, the Multi-IQ+ technology and lighting-fast target recovery yield a massive return on investment, pulling non-ferrous targets from sites where other detectors hear nothing.
Uncompromised Setup: The Complete Coil Ecosystem
I currently own the full lineup of coils for the Manticore, turning it into an incredibly versatile machine for any terrain or target type:
Large 15"/18" Coil (M15 / M18): Extreme depth performance for open fields and pastures, perfect for covering huge swathes of land quickly and pulling deep historical artifacts out of the reach of standard detectors.
Standard Stock Coil (M11): A fantastic all-rounder for everyday hunting.
Small Separation Coil (M8): The true game-changer for my detecting focus.
Archaeology & Hunting Pre-Christian Celtic Coins
Through my collaboration with the archaeological community in the Czech Republic, I have had the privilege of detecting on historically rich sites. My main focus is hunting tiny Celtic coins (obols, silver, and gold staters/rainbow cups) dating back to the pre-Christian era (BC).
For these minuscule ancient coins, the small separation coil is an absolute necessity:
Unmatched Target Separation: Ancient habitation sites are usually choked with iron trash. The small coil easily isolate the sharp, high-conductive signal of a tiny coin nestled right next to a rusty nail.
Sensitivity to Micro-Targets: Multi-IQ+ paired with the small footprint detects even the smallest low-conductive silver and gold pieces with crisp clarity.
2D Target Trace: The 2D display gives precise visual target identification, reducing unneeded digging on sensitive archaeological sites.
The Verdict
If you take metal detecting seriously—especially if you work alongside professional archaeologists—the Minelab Manticore is top of its class. Backed by a full set of coils, it handles everything from deep field sweeps with the 18" beast to surgically picking out Celtic gold with the small search head."

"I was very pleased with my order. They had the best pricing for my Nox900 and it arrived promptly. Side note I found a lot more silver in sites I previously swung over with the Equinox900."

"I bought my GM2000 and it was on a wait due to availability, Modern metal detectors was great with communication and times expected for delivery. I also noticed sometimes they offer free swag with purchase of certain detectors, the GM2000 didn’t qualify and they communicated that as well.
The support team is great and respond very quickly to all my questions. They aren’t always the cheapest but service makes up for the 20-30 bucks I could’ve saved elsewhere.
I’m waiting for a screen protector to come available and keep looking…
As far as the detector itself. I’m fairly new to this and it’s rough in my neck of the woods to find gold. However I’ve had luck with it in California…"
