I travelled from the Midlands on the Saturday to erect nearly 90 metres of post & 2-rail fencing for friends near Ashford. With materials supplied by Chart Fencing. The posts were good but the 3.66m x 100mm half round rails supplied were of a standard I can only describe as ‘seconds’. The majority of the rails were twisted along the length with some up to almost 60 degree twist. Having been a fencing contractor for 30 years and then worked in a fencing supplies company for 18, these rails would never have left our yard and we would have struggled to sell them as seconds possibly only for hedge patching at a greatly reduced cost. When Chart Fencing were contacted about the rails by my friends (who knew very little about fencing), they received the standard response that timber was a natural product; was liable to twisting (in winter?); that the order had been checked twice before it left their yard and that they should have contacted Chart within 24 hours of delivery if they were not happy. Unfortunately, the majority of the rails had to be used (which spoilt the appearance of the fence) as the horses were arriving the following day but after several calls, Chart agreed to replace 7 rails and on delivery these were found to be good quality. So I ask, why weren’t all the rails good and straight when initially delivered? If they were checked twice, then Chart’s order pickers and yard personnel definitely need more training as to what is and isn’t acceptable to supply. If getting rid of seconds timber on unsuspecting customers is Chart’s way of doing business, then this is dreadful customer service.
