“Been looking for a 2-wire dimmer for behind a switch for ages, plenty for 3-wire configuration few for 2-wire. Also needed to work with Samsung SmartThings Hub.
Discovered this one by trawling Vesternet, seemed to fit my requirements.
Delivery was quick, but I faltered initially; my fault, not the dimmers.
If you're going to buy one for 2-wire, and intend to use LED bulbs (filament bulbs over 40W are fine) you *MUST* also buy a by-pass device (£10). What it does is gives the dimmer enough power to operate--it's not a problem for 3-wire as there is a neutral wire.
Fitting was simple, it's quite small and fitted behind my wall switch easily. Fitting the by-pass, just as easy; inside the rose lamp or pendent wire in the by-pass across the bulb connection.
Configuration was simple with SmartThings, picked it up as a basic device (on/off/dim). There is an additional device driver if you want it to measure the power usage as well.
Would I get another, certainly.”
“I'm using several of these with Smartthings v2 hub some configured as a dimmer and some as a straight switch. The 2 wire (no neutral) installation is excellent for UK installation. There is a better custom driver available on the Smartthings forum than the standard one customise parameters according to your needs. But why doesn't this work out of the box with low current LEDs? I was surprised that a separate bypass unit is required.”
“Fantastic piece of kit. Easy to install if you are comfortable with home wiring. Only downfall is due to poor British home design, I had very shallow switch back boxes and had to chip out some block. Either way, only added about 20 mins to the job and some extra clean up.. The easy part way installing the dimmers. Vesternet have a great section on how the dimmers work with a standard on/off switch. I recommend reading that too!”
“Have bought a number these devices over the last few years and the latest releases really are great. The secondary input is really useful as cannot only associate with other devices but also launch scenes via your controller. So in the UK in older houses they can be a pain as ideally you have 45mm backbox, they can be installed in 35mm but need a little bit more poking around. 25mm forget it, get out the SDS drill and make a bigger hole. They are fantastically reliable over the 3 years ive owned and never had an issue.”
“Nice and easy to install. Using a standard(UK) wired house, followed the instructions on the Vesternet article.
I'm using LEDs (6x7W), they seem to work fine.
One annoyance is the unit seems to buzz when the lights are dimmed...”
“Great product. Installed as part of a home renovation, works well and fast to respond. Nice "soft start" feature - lights dim on and off, makes you feel like you're in a posh hotel!
Note - if dimming LED remember to check your minimum loads! (read tech guide on here) and install the Fibaro bypass if needed. Dimming Robus LED GU10 bulbs x 4 without bypass and a Philips LED bulb with bypass.”
“this product is very responsive and good quality build but if you are unfamiliar with how 2-way lighting works it can be a bit daunting to wire up in stairway lighting. Another issue is that the space in a standard uk socket is quite small and this unit takes up slightly more than a quarter as well as about 2/3rds the depth. If your switch uses a lot of depth already you might have a tight fit. You will also need some electrical wire to fit this which it does not come with.”
