This pencil glides over the paper leaving a lovely black line that is darker than the Blackwing 602's. I like it for drafting papers and making notes. It is also a good pencil for making sketches.

The Blackwing Pearl is a beautifully balanced pencil and an ideal aide to the creative process. As a writer, I find it smooth and flowing without being so soft as to require constant sharpening. I would be tempted to call it a workhorse but it is far too sleek and beautiful for such terminology. Simply perfect.

I find this mid - hardness compared with the softer blackwing and better in my hand for zipping along as it is less tempting to doodle. Lovely weight and balance.

Brilliant compromise between the two earlier pencils. Almost as black a line and soft a feel as the Blackwing, but with more clarity to the line. The wear resistance is, surprisingly, on par with the 602. Neither of these are very long-lasting, and relatively expensive when I can wear through an entire pencil in a long day of writing! So, perhaps not for everyone, but being lefthanded I like a soft pencil that doesn't smudge.

Noticeably smoother than the 602. Both are brilliant but I think the Pearl is more versatile.

Smooth lines, bit softer than the blackwing 602. Great for writing and sketching.
