“Orval, almost uniquely, remains true to the Trappist origins. There is no point in trying to describe the experience, words do not provide a suitable medium. Get a bottle, chill it to 5 degrees, decant it into an Orval glass and taste. If, by the end of the glass, you are not in raptures, never drink it again and leave the very limited production to people of really discerning taste.”

“Into a tulip glass, it appears a hazy dull copper with a decent head Smells of spicy, wood, and floral orange zest Taste is grapefruit, multi-grain bread clove becoming fig, good depth of interesting flavours here but I find it all a bit messy. However, I will never refuse a bottle”

“I have been drinking Orval for nearly 30 years, in Belgium. In the last 10 years there were increasing problems of supply. However, moving to UK, I am delighted to find hat The Belgian Beer Company has eliminated that problem. So why Orval? The delicious flavour, with its refreshing bitter after taste and the beautiful creamy foam (like that of Guinness). The only possible negative is that it is almost impossible to drink only one at a time”
