About Spicentice:

Back in 1994 when founder, Ketan Varu, was at university, his mum sent him recipes and spices to make real Indian curries that would remind him of home. Pretty soon all his friends were hooked and the idea for Spicentice was born.

All these years later Spicentice is very much a family business (with mum, Manjula, and dad, Ramnik, still making sure Ketan eats a good lunch!) and the range has grown to include Indian, Thai, Mexican, Portuguese, Cajun, Jamaican and Moroccan spice kits, along with handy tubs of herb & spice rubs.

Spicentice stands out from the crowd because of its commitment to traditional recipes that have been perfected over generations, with 100% pure herbs & spices, no waste and absolutely no nasties! Ketan now has a young family of his own and continues the tradition of cooking and sharing meals with family and friends.

My husband prefers his chicken grilled on skewers, rather than cooked on the hob in a sauce. So I deviated from the recipe. I didn't bother with onions & peppers, and had no lime so used lemon juice. Mixed up the marinade along with the garlic & ginger. Then marinated the chicken thigh chunks for a couple of hours. Threaded them onto skewers, brushed with the marinade and grilled for 10 minutes, turned them over , brushed more marinade over , grilled for another 10 minutes, turned over again, brushed more marinade over and put on the highest shelf for a couple more minutes. They were absolutely delicious. Next time I will reduce the remaining marinade in a pan and use it as a dipping sauce.

When I made this I noticed the recipe asks for 4spoons of soy sauce - dark at that which is even saltier. Plus the 2 spoons on hoisin which is salty. It wasn’t quite to my taste and nothing like a proper firecracker chicken from the local Chinese. I ordered 2 of these as it’s normally my fave takeaway, if I make it a 2nd time il probably half the soy sauce quantities in it.
