Was surprised when this tuba arrived several months earlier than expected. The instrument is a great tuba. Feels well made, plays well in tune and a great sound. Valves and slides move freely (more on that in a minute). There is some room for improvement though. First, DO NOT set this tuba on its bell. Its weight is out of balance when setting on the bell causing it to lean too much. The far side of the bell comes up off the floor about a half inch. This makes it much easier to fall over and will also cause the bell to bend. If you set it on the bell, find a way to brace it so that the bell stays flat on the floor. Second the supplied mouthpiece does not fit in the receiver correctly as it only goes in about an inch and thus the notes to not slot very well. It also throws off the intonation. I had much better success with my own mouthpiece even though the two were similar in design. One slides moves too freely and doesn't stay in position while playing. I have tried thicker grease and while that helped it still didn't stop it from moving. I may have to actually resort to bending the slide a little so that it will stay in place. The last problem I have, which I will need to have a shop fix for me, is that the thumb ring is in the wrong location for my size hand. It really should be adjustable to accommodate varying finger spans. I need it to a little bit lower and rotated in a little bit for a proper fit. Right now it is very uncomfortable to play for long periods of time and the ring is actually in the way if I try not to use it. All of these things are minor problems though and would not stop be from recommending this tuba to someone looking for a great F tuba on a budget.
